Bears just fall short against Whitchurch

The 3rd XI enjoyed a rare day out at the 'home of Welsh hockey' for their rematch with Whitchurch and, with the luxury of a stronger team and a twelfth man on the bench, showed great attacking intent from the opening whistle. Employing Edward George and Louis Carver to link defence and attack down the flanks helped pin the hosts in their own end for the opening period, in which Derek Wooding converted (again) to give Penarth a well-deserved lead.

Despite the best efforts of Andy Strong and Richard Cousins in midfield, Whitchurch gradually came back into the game, using their multiple substitutes wisely to gradually transfer the game to the opposite end of the pitch. Two goals in quick succession ended Joe Casey's brave resistance and gave the home side the lead, but Penarth refused to bow and, right on half-time, brought themselves level as Strong fired home from a penalty corner.

The second half began in much the same end-to-end nature as the the first had ended, with openings being created in both Ds. It was unfortunate for Penarth, however, that the only goal to come was at their end, and resulted from an aimless cross being haplessly deflected to an unmarked man. Determined to get something from a game they were clearly capable of winning, the Bears threw everything into attack, making the Whitchurch 'keeper work for his post-match pint. The home side weren't done, however, and a swift breakaway left the Penarth defence outnumbered and the score at 4-2. With no further additions to the scoreboard, the final result was distinctly unrepresentative of the game itself, and unfair on another stout defensive performance from perhaps the most senior back-line in the division, led by captain James Davies, who turned in his best game of the season so far while in the unfamiliar confines of left back.
