Church manager Ian Richards commented after the game
A fantastic reaction today, obviously we were disappointed to lose last week, but the players responded brilliantly in training on Wednesday and then responding to going one-nil down to a very good attacking side like Hemsworth. Lots of teams would have crumbled under that but we didn’t, it sparked us into life and after seventy-five minutes I thought we were the most effective team and the team what looked most dangerous coming forward, when we defended we were very hard to break down. They might have edged possession but it wasn’t purposeful possession whereas ours was very effective.
We had a clear game plan of how we wanted to play, how we wanted to exploit their weaknesses and it worked very well with Sam Scrivens, Nathan Keightley and Andy Ring up front and with Jordan Coduri breaking from midfield.
I thought Danny Howes was the catalyst to spark us back into life and then everybody followed and after the first goal the player in error held his hand up, he had a fantastic game after that and their second one was an uncharacteristic mistake by Ryan Johnson but he reacted brilliantly and made sure it didn’t happen again.
It was a superb performance against one of the best teams in this league who will be right up there come the end of the season and it was really nice to finish it off with five goals for, it’s something we should be pleased with.
It was an excellent crowd and atmosphere and at times the players were a joy to watch, not only with the ball but without the ball, how hard they worked trying to get the ball back.
A special mention to Kieran Ryan, I made the decision to leave him out today, it’s the first time I’ve done that but his response and his attitude when I told him in the warm up and in the changing room and the response when he came on and he assisted in the final goals. It just shows an example to others that in a fifty game season we’re going to need everybody and he understands the bigger picture and he responded brilliantly and had an influence on our victory. It’s been very pleasing.
We must now back it up on Wednesday (3rd Oct) at home to Bridlington Town.
