Murray's mint sinks Benfield

Penrith AFC 2 Newcastle Benfield 1

In weather conditions similar to what we've seen at the other side of the Atlantic, Penrith AFC produced one of their best performances to collect a vital 3 points against high flying Newcastle Benfield.
The game got off to a frantic start as both teams were pushing for an early breakthrough. Liam Hudson screwing a shot wide of the far post for the visitors and then Jonny Murray drilling a 20 yard shot just over the bar.
With goalkeeper Stuart Dixon expected to be on the sidelines for 4-6 weeks, Cameron Copeland stepped up and made some fine saves to keep out Paul Brayson and Jo Hailes.
At the other end Robbie Hebson and Chris Wraighte were causing problems out wide with Dean Rae striding forward from his defensive duties.
In the 40th minute Benfield were awarded a soft free kick 20 yards from goal and Brayson stepped up to curl a shot into the right hand corner.
It was a cruel blow for the Bonny Blues but on the stroke of halftime a long Will Paul throw in was headed clear, or that's what the visiting defence thought, and full back Dean Rae ran on to it to hit it first time into the top corner from all of 30 yards.
It was truly a special strike as it seemed to lift the players and supporters inside Frenchfield Park.
Both teams were pressing for their 2nd goal of the game throughout the second half with Hebson, Gardner and Murray going close while Brayson was a constant threat for Benfield.
The visitors bought on prolific marksman Jon Campbell as they looked at stealing victory but in the 89th minute Penrith went on the attack with Hebson but Lewis Scorgie made a last ditch tackle to put the ball out for a corner.
Wraighte swung the ball to the back post where Will Paul headed the ball back to find Murray who looped his header back into the corner of the net to send the home supporter's wild and claim a deserved 3 points for Jim Nichols' men.
