The Gary Hull Memorial Trophy.

The Gary Hull Memorial Trophy.

Norman de Bruin28 May 2025 - 19:38

What a journey it’s been….

After consultation with the Hull family, it has been decided to discontinue the Gary Hull Memorial trophy matches, which have been a regular feature of Percy Main AFC’s pre-season since 2003.

(Pictured, Main skipper Tony Browell receiving the trophy from Mrs Joan Hull following our win against Cullercoats after the 2011 event.)

The long running game, always well attended, was played as a tribute to the former Main treasurer and it has provided many memorable occasions over the years, which has also seen Percy Main AFC foster good relations between other clubs in the locality such as North Shields and Heaton Stannington FC.

Great memories from years gone by, including the women’s games played before the men’s, that first ever game between Percy Main and a Northern Alliance Select X1, which attracted coverage from the Sunday Sun and other local media before the internet was so common.
North Shields bringing the FA vase with them following their Wembley success in 2015, The Main’s victories over Heaton Stannington in 2020 and 2022, the 400+ crowd of 2015 and the bottle full of coins and notes after Shields fans and players had a whip round for Percy Main AFC, goals galore over the years , hot dogs to feed the 5,000, enough beer drunk to sink a battleship and many more!
Gary will still be remembered by the club, the annual programmes cherished by so many and the Memorial Day will live long with those who took part and those who attended.

So a very big thank you to all those who have played in the game over the years and who have shown such respect to the occasion and the Hull family even as time has gone on, those who have officiated with such dedication and expertise, especially referee Stu Kyle who travelled from London for the event every year bar one since 2008, the supporters who have always turned up in great numbers and enjoyed the afternoon with humour, those who have helped with the organisation of the event and finally Gary’s wonderful parents John and Joan, whose unwavering support for Percy Main Amateurs FC knows no bounds along with brothers John, David and Paul and extended families.
Never to be forgotten.

Not for the handsome trophy, but Percy Main will, once again host North Shields, in a friendly match planned at Purvis Park for Wednesday July 2nd, kicking off at 7pm and once again kindly sponsored by INSSA. It will be the first of our schedule of pre season games, watch this space for details as other games, both at home and away are planned in.
