The Main leave lt late, but it's not enough....

Thankfully the week's heavy rainfall had abated in time for the Northern Alliance Premier Division fixture to go ahead and the Purvis Park pitch was in good condition, unlike others under the control of the league which had to be postponed due to water logging.

Percy Main for their part were hoping to continue the same form which had resulted in a narrow extra time Bill Gardner Cup defeat at Carlisle City 7 days prior, but Seaton Delaval had other ideas and were in the most part good value for their victory although The Main did cause some problems during the latter stages of the game which were ultimately to go unrewarded.

The sides were meeting for the first time this season, but in total for the fourth time during the calendar year of 2013, with The Main winning 2 and drawing 1 of the previous encounters, but Delaval were out to reverse the trend and with both sides too near the lower reaches of the league table for comfort, the 3 points were to prove an invaluable haul for the visitors.

One new addition to the Percy Main squad was Rob Watson who transferred from Cullercoats in midweek, having totalled almost 300 appearances for the Links Road club, scoring 80 goals in the process and he took the left back position, while Sam Thompson another new signing had to be content with a place on the bench, although the centre forward took to the field late on during the game and scored his side's goal.

Former Percy Main team manager Jason Ritchie made the side for Seaton Delaval, while Kevin Westphal who had also represented The Villagers with distinction in the non too distant past and a former Main Player of the Year was another familiar face in the visitors line up.

The first effort on either goal came in the 9th minute as The Main's Redmond Cockburn found Chris Laidlaw down the left who cut inside and fired over, while at the other end Ross Phillips header from Ritchie's corner was hacked from the line and Daniel Young saw his shot blocked.

Daniel Sneap who had scored The Main's goal last Saturday saw his diving header from Watson's pin point centre, brilliantly saved by Frazer Nairn in the visitors goal, before Seaton Delaval took the lead on 19 minutes as Young advanced into the area, rounded goalkeeper Reece Dobie virtually on the touch line and crossed perfectly for Mason Stephenson to head into an empty net.

The first half ended with the visitors in the ascendancy as Ritchie fired a free kick into the side netting, Martin Douglas side footed just the wrong side of the upright and Stephenson went close.

As the visitors endeavoured to extend their lead, Cockburn was on the right place to kick Stewart Wright's looping header from the line and Westphal's shot from the edge of the area was well held by Dobie, but it was Wright who headed home his side's second from a left wing cross on the hour to put Delaval in command.

Thompson for Percy Main was introduced the fray on 77 minutes and his impact was almost instant as barely 60 seconds later, James Leggett made a vital challenge on the half way line, fed Rob Ridley and his defence splitting ball fell to Thompson who still left with much to do produced a clinical finish past the dive of Nairn to give his side hope.

Minutes later Thompson was inches away from levelling for The Main, but directed his header just wide from Leggett's cross, while Leggett himself sent a header from Peter Bradley's right wing free kick narrowly the wrong side of the post. Cockburn did get the ball in the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside, while a couple of penalty appeals for handball inside the Delaval area went unheeded by the referee.
