Half-Game Rule to Become Regulation

By Laura Phillips

Most age-grade teams at Peterborough have already implemented this ethos and now the RFU will be rolling it out to all age-grade teams.

From September 2019, the Half-Game Rule will become regulation. It means that every player in clubs, schools and colleges is guaranteed to get half the available game time. Regardless of age, gender, school or club, players repeatedly say that they want to play rugby with their friends and a feel a part of a team.

Research into this approach by the University of Essex found that:
There was no impact on the end result of a game
Players who played half game were six times more likely to enjoy it than those who did not
It has plenty of support from coaches, referees and parents.
This is positive news for the game as frequent playing leads to increased enjoyment, ability and confidence. This then improves the likelihood of an increased intent to play when older.

Before the start of the 2019/20 season, we will update you with the latest information. In the meantime, visit www.englandrugby.com/halfgame
