Although the visitors were pointless at the base of the league it was they that made the early running's with Phoenix being grateful to returning keeper Andy Hassell for the couple of interventions that he had to make.
Once Phoenix had overcome the early pressure the game settled in to one of mid field stalemate with neither side creating any clear chances. The break through when it came went the way of the home side. With just a few minutes of the first half remaining some unnecessary "holding" in the box at a Phoenix corner led to the official awarding a spot kick. "Fonzi" Hussein duly converted his kick.
The second half began very much like the first had been though Phoenix did appear to be the more adventurous side and the home side believed that they had doubled their score when the ball appeared to have crosses the line, indeed after the game the Kiveton manager commented that he believed that it should have been a goal however with the referee unsighted he relied on his assistant but unfortunately for the home side he was well behind play, as he had been for most of the game and failed to get involved.
With seventy minutes played the game took a significant turn for the worse the home side as influential defender Sam Hadfield had to retire injured.
Kiveton made the most of their good fortune launching numerous long direct balls is to the area that Hadfield had been dominating. The pressure this created when on seventy five minutes such a ball was flicked on allowing a Kiveton striker to beat Hassell in a one on one situation to level the score and then on 88 minutes an identical situation saw Kiveton take the lead.
In the dying minutes Phoenix rallied and found themselves in possession of a free kick in a good area however Hopkins's strike was well off the mark.
