Sunday saw Pitshanger U9 White play away against Super Skills. We got a taste of life as professional footballers when security guards were employed to wave us through into the grounds, keeping out any riff-raff not involved with the clubs playing. As such, it was only the devoted fans and family that got to see the game.
Pitshanger were confident after 2 previous wins against Pinner United and PROFA, and complacency may have crept in, explaining why we started so sleepily. Or it could have been the early kick-off. Despite the sleepy start, we managed to score early in the first quarter, with Ridhmeet converting an excellent cross from Matteo. Shortly afterwards, Kaly made a great run, passing for Ridhmeet to score his second. End of the first quarter: Super Skills 0 - Pitshanger 2.
In the second quarter, Velko, suffering with an injured knee, took over from Radu in goal. Unfortunately they managed to pull one back following a powerful shot from their best player. But Ridhmeet did well to score his hat-trick just before the end of the second quarter, and the first half finished 3-1 to Pitshanger.
Matteo took over the goalkeeping duties in the third quarter and there were signs we were starting to wake up. Following a great cross by Ridhmeet, Radu unleashed a net-buster from distance, with their goalkeeper standing no chance as the ball whistled into the top corner. There was also some physical midfield play, with Kaly and their goalscorer appearing to re-enact some scenes from Rocky IV. But there were no more goals and the quarter finished 4-1 to Pitshanger.
The last quarter saw nerves shredded, fingernails chewed, and Velko senior's blood pressure going through the roof, with plenty of action all over the pitch. Super Skills scored from distance to make it 4-2. Then Ridhmeet's mazy run forced a corner. Matteo provided a sublime cross which Kaly slotted home, restoring our 3 goal advantage. The action quickly moved to the other end of the pitch, with Indra making a great save. But from the resulting corner, they managed to score, again from distance. Matteo had a great shot saved. Indra made a fine save to force another corner, but again they managed to score from the resulting set-piece. When the final whistle was blown, Pitshanger had just managed to win. Final score: Super Skills 4, Pitshanger 5.
