Ponteland RFC are out of the Northumberland plate after falling to defeat against a strong Alnwick 2XV side.

A game which gained lots of publicity through the Rugby Pod podcast and social media, both teams were excited to play under the #FridayNightLights at Kingston Park.

Alnwick demonstrated their physical prowess from the onset with Ponteland managing to keep them scoreless until the 10th minute. A lineout maul from only 5 metres out crashed its way over the line to give Alnwick the lead.

Just seven minutes later Ponteland received a yellow card which saw Courtney West be sent off for a 10-minute spell. The visitors then went to kick over their first of six penalties of the day and took themselves into an eight-point lead.

It was then on the 29th minute mark where back-rower James Mould wrestled his way over the line from short range and score the #MightyMaroons only points of game.

Alnwick then went on to score a 40-metre drop goal and a further two more penalty kicks before heading down the tunnel for half time.

The second half started in familar fashion with Anlwick kicking over three consecutive penalties from range. Credit to the Alnwick stand-off who remained in hot form from the tee all day.

With seven minutes to go a loose Ponteland pass found its way into the hands of an Alnwick player who raced 40 metres to go underneath the sticks. They then found themselves over the line for thr final time in the final play of the game and with a succesful conversion Alnwick had sent Ponteland RFC out of the plate competition.
