Ponteland defeated North Shields 49-0 in the County Cup to progress to the semi finals

Danny Harrison made his 200th appearance for Ponteland in a team showing changes with Stu
Weir , Danny , Michael Searle, Dan Walton and Sam Walton from last weeks game .

On a sunny windswept pitch Pont started off well and a forward drive on 5 minutes saw Danny
Harrison over for a try 5-0.
Pont continued to move the ball at pace and a good break saw Sam Walton clear to score but
was brought back for crossing. Shields big forwards took route 1 as Pont switched to defence
mode with some gusto. The scrums saw last years weak attempt to get the ball in straight ignored
by the ref who allowed Shields to put the ball into the 2nd row at will. I know it sounds
a mad idea but why not apply the laws as written??
Down from my soap box Shields continued to run the ball well but players became isolated,
allowing Pont to win several turn overs, with Michael Searle in the thick of it. On 20 minutes
Pont won a lineout and drove it 20 metres before it mysteriously collapsed a yard short! From
the following scrum Craig Robinson crashed over 10-0. With five minutes to half time michael
Searle broke free, offloading to moller who just short of the line offloaded to Cam Bell to
score 15-0
Half time saw Phil Scandle on for his first run out of the season. Shields started brightly
and it took an excellent Sam Walton cover tackle to prevent a score. On 50 minutes a smart
offload from Dan Walton put Dave Gregory free. He was tackled on the line and touched down
but the ref was unsighted. From the ensuing scrum Pont ran a good line to allow Will Newbigin
to score 20-0.
Shields were now tiring as Pont upped the pressure with good breaks from Newbigin and Searle
allowing a 5 metre scrum. Pont forwards shunted the visitors back allowing Robinson to touch
down 25-0. Shields didn't lie down as Pont again found themselves on the defence. Sam Walton
broke from 10 metres from Ponts line. Further runs from Gregory , Newbigin and Scott Anderson
saw Michael Searle in for a try 30-0.
From the kick off Shields caught the ball and went on a storming run, being stopped just short
of the line. Sustained pressure was relieved by a further turn over with quick ball to Dan
Walton. His poor attempted chip over was plucked out of the air and only desperate defensive
tackles prevented a Shields score.
Ponts forwards continued to exert pressure around the fringes and another drive saw Robinson
over for his hat trick 35-0.
With 20 minutes to go Pont found another gear as Moller took a quick tap penalty to avoid
several tackles to score 40-0. An ironic cheer from the crowd greeted Ponts first conversion
by Will Newbigin 42-0. With 2minutes to go Sam Walton made yet another good run allowing
Moller to run 50 metres to touch down. Will Newbigin converted to make the final score 49-0

North Shields never gave up, providing a stern test for the home side. Running in 9 tries
in front of the watching Falcons coaches , Mike Blair and Ally Hogg has set the groundwork
for the first league game next week at home to Winlaton Vulcans
