Ponteland had problems as players dropped out on Saturday morning resulting in Jonny Bennett having his first start on the wing with JC on the bench!

Guisborough 31 Ponteland 11

In the excitement of our first bus trip the shirts were left behind at Pont so the team ran out in Guisborough’s change strip (thanks guys!)
Gboro kicked off, Pont left it, the home team caught it, moved it thro the hands and almost scored!! Pont were slow out of the blocks and a poor kick by Moller allowed Gboro to run wide and several missed tackles, touch down to make it 0-5 after 8 minutes. The try kicked Pont into life and a great steal by Robinson allowed Pont to move wide as Moller and Storey tore holes in the defence, with a cheeky offload seeing Freer dive over the line to score. Mullins made it 7-5.
Pont continued to pressurise as driving line outs and heaving scrums saw Pont with loads of possession but unable to convert it to points. Gboro defended well and broke out at times but Pont looked well on top as half time blew at 7-5

The 2nd half maintained Pont pressure as a forward drive resulted in a penalty by Mullins 10-5. The home team upped their game and a good steal by Coulthard prevented a dangerous move. Coulthard then turned villain as he hacked a loose ball to their backs who ran it wide to score in the corner 10-10.
A difficult penalty was missed by Mullins but more pressure saw the home team with a 5 metre scrum. Pont drove them back and round and on reaching 180 degrees Gboro’s back row peeled off and scored !! 10-17.
The home team were now running hard at Pont and with 10 minutes to go a good line break saw their backs moving wide as quick hands created an overlap. The last pass to the winger was clearly forward but was missed by a flagging referee as he touched down to make it 10 -24 with the conversion.
Pot were now chasing the game and several break outs in their own half saw Pont loose possession as Gboro punished the mistakes with a final try and conversion 10-31
Pont still had time to drive down field and a 3 on 1 emerged five metres out a retiring Gboro player deliberately slapped down the scoring pass, to be awarded with a home scrum !!! Two strikes against the head saw Pont create out wide with Pete Newbigin standing in acres of space 10 metres from the line. A poor pass by Storey saw Newbigin knock on in what could only be described in football terms as missing an open goal!

Ponteland had more of the possession but it was the home team who capitalised on Ponteland’s profligacy to convert pressure into points
