Percy Park 56 Ponteland 5

Being two leagues apart last season this was always going to be a massive ask for Ponteland. Despite the score the lads can take a lot of positives out of the game.
The start couldn’t have been worse ! A knock on and penalty from the kick off put Park 5 metres from the line. Great defence repelled the forward drive but a missed tackle out wide allowed Park in for the opening try ( 2 min) the kick was converted as was every other Park try in the game 0-7 Park continued to push forward and a further lineout drive was stopped short, then awarded by the ref. 0-14 ( 6 min) Pont started to get into the game and moved the ball well and so it was disappointing when two penalties and a chip over the top saw try three for Park 0-21 ( 16 min) Pont continued to frustrate as knock ons and missed tackles punctuated passages of good play. A lineout drive brought up the bonus try for Park 0-28 ( 25 min) From the kick off a series of missed tackles saw a walk in try 0-35 (26 min)
At last Pont started to show some continuity and the last 15 minutes of the half were all Pont. Trott went over in the corner 5-35 ( 31 min ) and was stopped on the line on a further two occasions. Park were given a yellow card as they scrambled to contain a rampant Pont culminating in Mould putting in a monster tackle as Park tried to run out. It was Park who were happiest to hear the half time whistle
HT 5-35
Park started brightly in the second half and only a couple of turn overs from the Pont back row kept them at bay. Good offloading by Park saw them in for their next try 5-42 (48 min) . From the kick off Park immediately moved the ball wide and another missed tackle saw them in again 49-5 ( 50 min) like the first half Pont forced their way back into the game and with all subs on they stood toe to toe with Park for the next 30 minutes. Park finally broke through with two minutes left to make it 56-5 at the whistle.
In a fast flowing game , well refereed, Pont were given a lesson in finishing your chances. The positive responses by the players have given the coaches a basis to work on taking things forward.
