‘Lol’ was simply Mr. Potters Bar Cricket Club. He held umpteen roles within the club and did them all outstandingly well, with little fuss or adulation.
Dave joined the club from Hatfield in around 1974 and was soon an integral part of the 1st XI – so much so he was soon 1st XI captain, a role he held for countless years.
Lol was a fine all-round cricketer, a fierce competitor and as shrewd a cricket tactician as you would find and possessed a memory of countless club cricketers re strengths and weaknesses.
Dave worked tirelessly on the ground, culminating in Hertfordshire using the ground for 1-day matches, 2 and 3-day cricket. He worked wonders on a shoestring budget, finding ingenious ways of cutting the outfield, when outdated machinery was well past its use-by date. Lol curated the ground for years and years.
Lol was presented with a Presidency of the club in 2006 and officially recognised by the ECB for his work and dedication to all at Potters Bar CC in 2021. No-one at the club has received this commendation.
Dave was passionate about most sports, would talk passionately over a pint about nigh on anything. He loved Swindon Town as well as being a committed semi-pro footballer who latterly went into management locally.
Dave leaves Pat his wife of 50 years and his family and a prouder man of them you will not find.
As a club, it’s hard to know or even come to terms that Lol will no longer be around. He doesn’t leave a hole it’s a more of a cavern. He did so much for us all and was respected by all those who met him.
The word legend is banded around these days with great regularity but for all at PBCC, this man epitomises the word and we will all miss him so, so dearly.
Rest in peace Lol
