Bar gained their third win on the road with a hard fought win over a Hertford team, who at never gave in and at times could probably feel a little hard done by.
Luke Chapman called right and won his eighth straight toss and asked Hertford to bat first on a bowler friendly looking surface. It took just 5 balls for Bar to get on the scoreboard as Jigar Mehta enticed a square drive out of Hugh Cavener, who picked out Anmol Maheshram at point. It should have been better as Will Ray was dropped at second slip on just 1 - however it was grounded.
Max Lawrance and Will Ray both looked in good touch but whilst the bat was beaten a number of times, there was also some hit me balls and Max Lawrance hit 5 successive boundaries off of Callum Lloyd to get the hosts voices raising. However next over, Jigar Mehta got one to tail in a touch and crash into Max Lawrance's middle stump.
49 for 2 was soon 54 for 3 as Benji Cowell missed a straight one from Callum Lloyd for his first success of the summer. Max Mikedis joined Will Ray and they put the bad ball away on a lightening quick outfield.
Ashleigh Cox came on and found the edge of Will Ray's bat and was taken low at slip and four balls later Bailey Eustance went caught in the gully and Bar were now massively on top. When Dylan Williams feather edged through to Thorn Parkes, again off of Ash Cox's bowling, the hosts were 6 down for 109 and went into the break sat 114 for 6 off of 30 overs.
However, Hertford never give up and Max Mikedis played really well and coupled with some stubborn defiance from Adam Carlson saw them put on 47 before Thilan Walallawita found the edge and Luke Chapman took a good low catch at slip. Mikedis was still playing sensibly and Johnny Underdown added some oomph to proceedings as the early sideways movement was now gone and it looked a pretty flat surface.
The pair put on 61 in 69 balls as Bar looked short on ideas. The pair ran well, put the bad ball away and got Hertford past 200 and it was now game on. However Underwood went for 34 as Ash Cox had him caught in the deep. Kyle Wilson was undone by a nice ball from Thilan Walallawita but then saw some strange batting where runs and an extra two points were turned down by the hosts as the attempt to hit boundaries, which didn't arrive, were greater than scoring easy runs.
Max Mikedis lovely innings came to an end as he was run out for 78 in just shy of three hours at the wicket. So the hosts dismissed for 223 with Ash Cox taking 4 for 49, Thilan Walallawita 2 for 33, Jigar Mehta 2 for 49 and Cal Lloyd, 1 for 43 the wicket takers.
So 224 to win and Bar started positively and Anmol Maheshram deposited two maximums inside the first four overs to get Bar up and running. He soon after departed leg before for 14 and Bar were 24 for 1 after 4 overs.
Needing 200 to win in 52 overs from here on, Reece Hussain came to the wicket and dispatched his first ball for a delightful boundary which was greeted with cheers and he was to outscore Thorn Parkes as the pair looked in some comfort but as tea neared, Reece Hussain looked for all the money caught behind on 43 - not out was the answer and that left Hertford and a large amount watching perplexed. Bar went into tea 6 balls later sat 107 for 1 needing 117 to win in 36 overs.
Hertford came out after tea and had a right go. They got a wicket in the second over after the break as Thorn Parkes skied to deep square and departed for 38. 110 for 2 and whilst Reece Hussain completed his first league fifty of the summer, he was excellently taken at short third man by Max Lawrance for 53 soon after.
James Scott made just 5 as he skied to the keeper as Bar had been reduced to 139 for 4 and Bar then dug in as Kashyap Shah took his time to get in and overs were starting to tick away a tad. He found his way hitting 4 nice boundaries, but spin got him as he edged low to slip and Adam Carlson took a good catch.
When Charlie Scott departed for 43 and when Thilan Walallawita tried to clear the biggest boundary of the game, Bar were 193 for 7 and in trouble. Time for cool heads was needed and Ash Cox 14 and Luke Chapman 19 saw Bar home with 4 overs to spare and now sit 4th in the table.
A hard fought win against a team who simply dont give in and a big win at that. Next up bottom club Old Owens who always give Bar a game and there is rarely no more than the width of a fag packet between them on the day. However a win again and their first home win of the season would see them close the gap on the top 3.
