Individual performances win the day
The 4’s travelled to picturesque St Margaretsbury with a much changed team due to mass unavailability and with only 2 regular bowlers and a player who had to leave at 4.30pm and we were up against it before a ball had even been bowled.
Having won the toss and reluctantly chosen to field on a baking hot day we started well with Captain Ellis and colt Alex Latrides keeping it tight and even though no wickets fell we were well on top after 12 overs with the oppo only scoring 15 runs. Ram and Alex Molloy came on and the first wicket fell off Alex’s first ball with a catch from Lewis.
Runs were hard to come by off the bat and we kept pressing and soon had our second wicket and also Alex’s second. At drinks St Margaretsbury were 59-2 but that felt under par on a good pitch with small boundary’s. We kept rotating the bowlers and even though we gave away far to many extras - 50 in total - we always had the score in control and once Amit got the wicket of there best player we were in the box seat.
With 24 overs gone our trump card was introduced and Chandra came on to bowl and bowled his best spell for the club this season. He bowled fast and straight and the batsmen couldn’t live with him. He ended with 4-17 with all his victims bowled including 2 with middle stump out the ground. St Margaretsbury eventually finished on 136-8 and we were by far the happier team.
After tea Gary Froy and Amit Shrimali opened and this new opening partnership started well with Amit finding the fence easily but after he fell to a good ball for 17 we witnessed as good an innings as I’ve seen in the 4’s for sometime. After scratching around for the first 5 overs looking like a walking wicket Gary flayed the ball to all parts with some fantastic shots. His first 9 balls wielded 3 ugly singles but his next 23 contained 8 4’s and 2 6’s and when he was out in the 13th over for 61 his job was done. We lost a few cheap wickets after this but we were always comfortable and eventually eased over the line in the 25th over.
A great display from the team with 2 standout performances
