A sunny day greeted the 4's at Owens school in a mouth-watering top of the table clash against unbeaten Hitchin and after losing the toss Ellis led the boys on to the field looking to get in amongst there batsmen early.
Jeff Barnes opened the bowling and bowled a fantastic opening spell and was rewarded early on when a sharp catch was taken in the field and Ellis was soon to join the party as 3 more quick wickets fell to have the oppo 20-4. Runs continued to be hard to come by with excellent fielding particularly by Lewis Taylor and young colt Eyshan catching the eye. At 25 overs Hitchin were 58-4 and struggling and things soon got worse as Eyshan claimed 2 quick wickets to have them 67-7.
To the visitors credit they dug in and their 2 colts at the crease batted excellently and pushed the score over 100 and in the last 5 overs opened up and eventually got there score to a respectable 158-8. Tea was taken and Bar were disappointed to have not got them out cheaper but we steeled ourselves for the run chase knowing batting our overs would see the match in the bag. Scott de le Fuente and Dylan Grice were our openers and on a flat wicket were looking for runs but disaster struck as they were both bowled in the first 2 overs to leave us 4-2 and nervous. New men in Jack Phillips and Luke Short steered the ship into calmer waters with patient batting to get us back on an even keel and we were soon at drinks 90-2 with Luke getting a fluent half century.
After there initial inroads, Hitchin were flagging and the boundary was becoming easier to find and not long after Jack was celebrating his first 50 of the season Luke brought up his century hitting the winning runs.
A truly fantastic performance and many positives to take into next week. The 4's bandwagon rolls onto next week with Baldock coming to town.
