FILLIES MAINTAIN STEADY START

Sunday 10 May 2009, The Walk
Underhill Ladies 62 – 10 (14.2 overs)
Potters Bar Fillies 65 – 1 (9.4 overs)
The Fillies new season continued on a winning note at a sunny Walk on Sunday as they recorded their second win in two matches, beating what admittedly appeared to be an inexperienced Underhill team by 9 wickets.
Winning the toss, Fillies skipper Debbie Palmer inserted the opposition, electing to open her bowling attack with Annette Scott and Di Merrill. The opening four overs were reasonably quiet, the bowlers keeping it tight at a smidge over four an over. The first bowling change introduced new (in her second match) girl Linda Mawunga and had an immediate impact, taking her first wicket for the club with the second ball of her first over, clean bowling the Underhill number two for two. Her very next ball bowled the number three for a duck, leaving her on a hat-trick but a leg bye the following ball put paid to that.
The visitors then steadied their ship and quietly progressed to 45 when their next wicket fell, Linda taking her third wicket, dismissing the number 4 for 3. Their next wicket fell in the next over, Lorett Bredenkamp bowling Underhill’s number 5 for nought, their score now 50 – 4, with their unbeaten opener providing the only continuity.
The next bowling change introduced Ellie Fitzatrick and vice-skipper Kim Skinner and almost immediately bore fruit, Ellie dismissing the number five for another duck and in her first over Kim had the Underhill’s dangerous opener run out (by a fine return by Di) for 28, leaving the visitors on 56 -6.
Unfortunately for Underhill, things rapidly went downhill from here with their last four wickets going for six runs, Kim benefitting from two sharp stumpings by the lightening-reflexed ‘keeper Debbie P and Ellie (fielder Mel ) and Nicky Shambles (fielder Di) getting a run out each.
Faced with a target of 63 to win, Fillies openers Debbie P and Ellie cruised to 57 before Debbie was bowled for 16 (or “selflessly sacrificing her wicket to give someone else a bat” as she would have it!).
A classy four from Ellie brought up the winning runs, with Ellie finishing on 17* and Linda M 2*.
The next match is at home on Sunday 17th where the Fillies entertain Wanstead, kick-off 10.00. Any and all support gratefully received.
