Potters Bar Town 1-0 Herne Bay The Scholars were made to work for the opening day victory.

Quentin Monville’s 89th minute winner secured Potters Bar a 1-0 win against Herne Bay, despite playing the last 25 minutes of the game with midfielder Calvin Dickson in goal.

It was a win that showed the character of the new Scholars side, who will have been delighted to wrap up the win.

Story of the match
Debutant Emmanuel Agboola made his first save of the game when Kyman Thomas had a shot just inside the box for the visitors.

Finlay Titchmarsh made a good run forward on the right hand side, crossing the ball into Joe Boachie, but the striker could not quite get a solid connection on the ball.

Frazer Shaw had to be alert to clear a cross away which had been floated towards the back post.

Thomas had another chance, this time with his head, but he could not find the target.

Agboola fired the ball long to Quentin Monville, but he could not get it under control.

He had another chance soon after, as he was played in on goal but Jordan-John Perrin made a smart stop to keep it out.

Dejon Noel-Williams had a golden chance soon after, as the ball flashed across the box, but he could not get the shot on target.

Jacques Kpohomouh had a chance from a set piece, rising above the defenders, but he headed just wide.

Ethan Kaiser hit the post around the half an hour mark, as Monville floated a cross into the centre back who nodded it onto the woodwork.

Marcel Barrington had a chance for Herne Bay on the counterattack, but the number nine’s shot went high and wide.

Joe Boachie had his first shot just before the break, but it missed the target.

Perrin was on hand to catch a deep cross from Monville.

It was goalless at the break, in a half where both sides had opportunities but neither had been able to take them.

It remained all to play for at the interval.

Half time score: Potters Bar Town 0-0 Herne Bay

Noel-Williams cut out a pass on the halfway line and looked to counter but could not quite fashion an opening.

Mo Kamara had a go from range, but his dipping effort was saved by Perrin.

Thomas had a shot on the edge of the box, but it was saved comfortably by Agboola.

Barrington hit the post for Herne Bay soon after, as his drilled shot from the edge of the box rolled its way onto the post.

Bar were forced into a change in goal when Agboola was forced off injured, with Calvin Dickson coming on in his place.

Kamara flashed the ball across goal, but it was cleared off the line as the game approached the final stages.

Lewis Manor came desperately close to setting up Boachie when he nodded the ball down to hm, but it was blocked.

Boachie then turned playmaker for Manor, but the striker was judged to be offside as he raced in on goal.

Kaiser headed wide from a corner as the game approached the final ten minutes.

Monville fired Bar in front just before added time, when substitute Kasim Aidoo cut the ball back to him, and he calmly slotted the ball home.

The last few minutes were nervy, but Bar were able to hold on to secure a fantastic victory given they had ended the game with a central midfielder in goal.

It was a performance that showed the character of the new side.
