Scholars see off the Urchins

Two goals within four first half minutes were enough to see The Scholars through to the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup and into the hat for Mondays draw.
An entertaining game saw two well matched sides battle it out on the last of the summer days but at the end of the day a thoroughly professional performance from the home side made sure that for once there were to be no last minute dramas in this game.

Hornchurch began brightly with Matt Johnson going close from a corner in just the second minute. Prmier league leading scorer Chris Dickson was proving a handful for the Bar defence almost scoring twice within a couple of minutes. racing onto a long ball in the 11th minute he looked sure to score but was denied by the advancing R'avan Constable in the bar goal . Moments later Dickson drilled a free header from a corner over the top.
With the early threat stifled The Scholars came more into the game as Chris Doyle advanced down the right to put over a cross that just begged someone to get on the end of it.
Two minutes later Potters Bar were in front , though, as James Budden won a thundering tackle in the middle of the park and, with a terrified Urchins defence retreating, struck the ball from outside the area to beat Joe Wright in the Hornchurch goal.

With the Scholars fans still celebrating just four minutes later Josh Hutchinson made it 7 for the season with a perfectly directed header from Thomas Gogo's tempting cross..

The second half began almost as the first with Hornchurch looking to somehow get a foothold in the game. Three corners in quick succession piled on the pressure but the Bar defence dealt with everything thrown at them relatively comfortably.
A driving run from defender Matt Johnson caused problems as he looked to emulate Budden's earlier effort but a timely tackle from George Quarrington - Carter seemed to sum up the afternoon for the visistors ; Promising much but failing to make the most of the possession they had as they repeatedly came up against a rock solid , well organised and committed midfield and defence.

The game almost ended with another goal for the Scholars as Keagan Cole raced forward from midfield in the 40th minute to find Thomas Gogo who curled his shot just wide with the Urchins 'keeper stranded. A goal which would have capped a great performance to beat one of our league's strongest sides and favourites for promotion.
