O’Leary was happy with his side’s effort

Bar played 90 minutes with a man less than their opposite number in a match that saw the Scholars get their first draw of the season, with the game ending 1-1.

The Maroons were reduced to 10 men after only 5 minutes, as Ellesley was given his marching orders for a high challenge that prevented a counterattack.

Things went from bad to worse for the Scholars early on, as Bosma headed in from the resulting free kick, with Burbidge rooted to the spot as Bosma had a free header to put Lewes in front.

The Scholars found themselves under significant pressure after the goal as they struggled to adjust to going a man down, as Payne made a good block 16 minutes in and a shot rattled against the crossbar just 2 minutes later as Lewes looked to double their lead.

Bar did grow into the half as it went on, as Payne forced a smart stop from Stroomberg-Clarke with 20 minutes played.

Esan tried to build on this and went closest to scoring for O’Leary’s side in the first half 29 minutes in, as his shot from range clipped the outside of the post before going wide.

6 minutes later Stroomberg-Clarke made a strong save to deny Charles, as Esan tried his luck from range again in the 40th minute. Much like the first time though, his effort couldn’t find the target.

Half time ended a disappointing 45 minutes for the Scholars, who had failed to get into gear against a side who they were the favourites to beat, having seen Ellesley sent off early on.

The Maroons started the second half positively, as Ward-Cochrane broke away on the right-hand side and fired a shot at Stroomberg-Clarke, only to see his effort saved.

Charles had a great chance to put Bar level after 63 minutes, as Ward-Cochrane lobbed a pass into him, however he slipped before shooting and wasn’t able to get a shot away from close range.

The game lacked action until the latter stages of the second half, as the Scholars struggled to break down a resolute Lewes defence, who seemed content to stick with their one goal lead.

Charles grabbed Bar an equaliser out of nowhere to end the eventless period of the game. The goal was scored as a result of a superb run from Kyei, who sprinted down the left wing before driving a cross into Charles, who converted beyond Stroomberg-Clarke to level the tie. The 80th minute goal to level the scores had been deserved for O’Leary’s side, who improved massively after the interval.

The game had a tense ending, as there were 6 minutes of added time at the end of the match, which saw Burbidge booked for a late challenge just outside of his box.

Full time saw Bar draw for the first time of the season, as Charles netted his first of the season.

The Scholars’ boss Lee O’Leary did an interview with the club at full time, which you can find here.

O'Leary's side head to Kingstonian away next Wednesday hoping to return to winning ways.
