This Beds FA Senior Cup First Round tie was eventually decided by Potton winning 4-2 on penalties after a goalless match. step 5 Potton were a match for their step 4 opponents with an open match but both teams were guilty of giving the ball away when trying to play open football.
Kempston started brightly with first Stratton seeing his shot saved by Irish and then Irish tipped the ball over the bar from Brennan. The match was being played at a frantic pace with both sides giving the final ball away. Potton were coming more into the game and Nzembela was through on goal but tried to chip the keeper who made an easy save. Andrews saw his shot fumbled by keeper Knox and at the other end Newman and Stratton had shots easily collected by Irish. Andrews saw his free kick go over the bar as did a free kick from Willis. Ellis did well to save from Baker and Brennan. Just before half-time Willis tried his luck from 25 yards but was way over the bar. HT 0-0
Whatever Potton’s management said to them at half-time they came out roaring on the attack and started brightly with Nzembela seeing his shot saved and then had a weak shot with his left foot easily collected by the keeper. Nzembela then forced a corner and from the corner he shot wide. Jordan Goodman headed over from a corner. Simms made a determined run but ended shooting wide. Kempston came more into the game when a centre from Marsh was cleared. The best chance of the night fell to Newman who was put in the clear and with only Ellis to beat shot over the bar. From the edge of the area Wright had a strong shot blocked . From one Potton corner Potton had an effort blocked on the line by the keeper and after it had been cleared the keeper had lengthy treatment by the physio. Andrews then shot over the bar as did Robbie Goodman at the other end. In the closing minutes Rafa Goodman gave the ball away in mid field but Potton did well to stop Kempston having a shot. The referee did not play many minutes of added time and so it was to be decided by penalties. FT 0-0
The first and fourth penalties from Kempston hit the cross bar in virtually the same place and with Potton converting all of their four penalties they went through to the next round 4-2 on penalties.

Next for Potton is Broadfields United at home on Saturday 26 October KO 3.00pm in Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. Then it is on Tuesday 29 October when they make the short trip to Stotfold in the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy Second Round KO 7.45pm.
It is extremely encouraging to see the number of spectators coming to our home matches. Also the atmosphere in the club house before, during and after the matches has been very good.
