POTTON UNITED 1 AMPTHILL TOWN 1
(Potton United win 3-1 on penalties)
For this Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy Potton were without four members of their regular squad as they were cup tied but progressed to the Quarter Finals when they play Leighton Town in the Quarter Final at Potton on Tuesday 28 January.
The match can best be summed up by Ampthill opening the scoring with a soft goal, Potton replied just before the interval. In the second half Ampthill goalkeeper Ross Tomkins made at least four tremendous saves—including one from a penalty (which was Potton’s third successive failure from the penalty spot. It went to penalties with Tompkins saving one but Potton scoring three but Sam Irish saved three penalties to send Potton through.
Early play was fairly even with Skinner shooting wide and the Nzembala saw his shot go wide before the keeper saved his next shot. In the 19th minute Potton failed to clear their lines and the ball went to Butler whose shot slipped through Irish’s hands and crept into the net to give Ampthill the lead. The speedy Burton made a good run but his centre was cleared. From a free kick Willis headed back across the goal but no one was on hand to convert. In the 40th minute Nzembala played the ball through to Williams who scored—his third goal in three games. HT 1-1
The score at half-time was a fair reflection on the match but Potton seemed to come out more determined in the second half. Andrews shot from 25 yards went over the bar and Williams had a shot blocked. The ball was bouncing about in the penalty area and the keeper saved from Nzembal and from the rebound Eze fairly blasted the ball towards the goal and somehow the keeper kept it out. On 67 minutes Potton were awarded a penalty but Williams well struck penalty was saved by the diving keeper. From an Ampthill corner Mead headed narrowly wide after not being challenged. From 25 yards Nzembala shot narrowly over the bar. Potton were having more possession and Williams saw his shot well saved again and Rafe Goodman shot over from distance. In the last minute of added time an unchallenged Burke headed just wide of the goal. FT 1-1
So to the dreaded penalties. Potton missed the first but scored the next three. With Irish saving three penalties Potton are through to the next round.
