Royals tame tigers

Potton ended their miserable run of seven consecutive defeats with a convincing and well deserved victory at London Tigers. Potton had to make one late change to their expected line-up when Ashley Farooqui dropped out in the morning feeling unwell but his replacement Jack Newlands turned in a very competent performance and Hadleigh Boughton received a late call to sit on the substitutes bench.
Potton started with their preferred 4-4-2 formation but an early mistake by Jordan Wright saw him lose the ball but fortunately he was able to recover and make a saving tackle at the expense of a corner. Potton were starting to play some neat football and in the 9th minute Jim Burnside was fouled in the penalty area. Danny Webb made no mistake from the spot to give Potton the lead. Four minutes later Potton doubled their lead when a determined run from Aaron Murrell saw him play the ball to Webb whose quick back heel fell to Burnside who shot home from the edge of the penalty box. Soon afterwards Burnside shot wide and in a rare Tigers attack Solifou shot across the Potton goal. A Jonny Hall centre was then turned over the bar by a Tigers defender. Potton continued to and Hall saw his effort blocked before a ball from Webb found Murrell whose goal bound shot was also blocked. Murrell made yet another good run but no one was on hand following up to take the chance. A rare shot from Able was easily dealt with by Tyler Josephs. HT 0-2
Potton had to continue the same way for the second half and it was not long before Hall’s free kick was blocked by the wall. Potton were restricting Tigers to shots from outside the penalty area and Solifou tried an effort from 20 yards that was easily saved. At the other end Webb saw his effort nearly deflected for an own goal. Solifou tried another long range shot before a free kick from Hall was turned over the bar by the keeper. In the 55th minute Jordan Wright’s headed clearance from inside his own half bounced over the advancing keeper and fell to Burnside to put into an empty net. Substitute Dos Santo made a good run before firing over Potton’s cross bar. Hall saw another free kick tipped over the bar by the keeper. In the 82nd minute Potton’s defence made a tremendous hash of clearing the ball and eventually it fell to Essathi to shoot into the net. This encouraged Tigers and they pressed to reduce the arrears and one effort went across the Potton goal with no Tigers on hand to finish it off. In the last minute Joseph’s made a finger tip save from an effort from Solifou. FT 1-3
