Wembley woes for Royals

Threadbare Potton lose on the road.

Back in October Potton had faced Wembley at the Hollow and come away with an impressive 4-0 win. Today was a different affair as Wembley who fielded only two players from that match were a much different opponent.
Though in truth Potton helped to bring about their own downfall as all three goals they conceded were down to defensive errors.
A threadbare Potton were without the injured Aaron Murrell and Tom Blatch and Jonny Hall was unwell meaning that manager, Steve Kuhne, was named on the bench.
Potton lined up with an unusual 4-4-1-1 with Martin Danobrega playing behind the lone forward of Jim Burnside. James Sage was at left back with Christian Smail dropping into the back four from his usual midfield role.
Wembley started much the brighter of the teams and a warning shot was fired just wide on 7 minutes by Iley with the Potton defence nowhere to be seen.
The same player was involved again three minutes later when Hunt got caught in Possession but Ebonine fired wide.
This was only a temporary let off as Wembley took the lead two minutes later on 12 minutes as Carl Tappin was easily beaten by the impressive Iley who delivered an excellent cross that was converted by the towering Ebonine.
Just two minutes later and the hosts doubled their lead when this time Ogunsola was given two much on the edge of the box by a retreating Gareth Hunt to slot home from 18 yards.
Wembley then increased their lead with the goal of the game on 22 minutes when Iley picked up the ball 10 yards inside in his own half but was able to run without a tackle being made before slotting home from 5 yards.
At this stage Potton were in trouble. The 4-4-1-1 had in reality become a 4-2-4 with huge holes in midfield allowing the hosts to dictate possession.
Potton though regrouped with Sage returning to centre half, Tappin moving to left back and Smail to right back and this seemed to nullify the Wembley attacks.
In fact Potton got a goal back on 30 minutes when a free kick was awarded 20 yards out and Ryan Don converted with some style to give the Royals some hope.
Potton then had another chance on 42 minutes when a cross shot from Mo Ahmed nearly deceived Zavango in the Wembley goal.
So with the wind and the slope now in their favour it was crucial for Potton to score next in the second half if they were to get anything out of this game.
Potton started brightly and Mo Ahmed fed Jim Burnside who shot just wide on 46 minutes.
Gareth Hunt then released Danny Webb but his shot was well saved by Zavango as the visitors started much the brighter.
Wembley then had a couple of chances when the ever dangerous Iley forced a good save from Tyler Josephs and a minute later A’lessio shot just wide on 57 minutes.
Potton reduced the deficit further on 58 minutes when Gareth Hunt won back possession and passed to Jim Burnside who was brought down in the box.
Danny Webb converted with ease for his 15th goal of the season.
This was as good as it got for Potton though as even though Potton has the majority of possession for the remainder of the game apart from a Mo Ahmed chance created by Gary Ansell Carter on 75 minutes, Potton offered little going forward.
They were not helped in their cause by some poor gamesmanship from their hosts with Fehmi-Gill being the worst and the referee eventually run out of patience with him and booked him late on.
So Potton came away by losing by the odd goal in five but with a full squad this could have been a different scoreline.
Potton are next at home on Saturday when they take on Colney Heath.
