2nd XV Matchday Report 07/09/19

The opening game of the season saw Prenton host Anselmians at The Dell. The squad was strong in numbers (24 players to choose from) but largely lacked experience and familiarity as this was the first game that many of the players had participated in together. This, coupled with the nerves that invariably come with the first game of the season, led to Anselmians dominating in the first 30 minutes.

A lack of communication on our part contributed to errors both in defence and going forward, resulting in Prenton being on the back foot as we struggled to gel as a team. This ultimately led to the more experienced visitors being able to score 3 tries without reply and converting 2 early on in the game.

However as the game went on the home team managed to rally together and demonstrate outstanding resilience to improve steadily as we really grew into the game. By the end of the first half Prenton were able to stem the tide and even start gaining territory with much more sturdy defense, excellent link up play and incisive runs from the whole squad. After the half time break we were consistently breaking through their back line. The pack were able to use their superior strength to shrug tackles off, and with new skipper Nathan McLelland leading the charge from the backs some quality passing and great pace eventually saw Prenton score through a debut try from Jack Evans. The raw effort exerted by Jack to push through a tackle, stay on his feet and then sprint half the pitch took its toll however, as he had to be substituted immediately. Tired and frustrated, it looked as if the tables had turned on Anselmians. But just as fortunes were looking up, they were able to execute a devastating pass routine which exposed a huge gap in our back line allowing the visitors to capitalise with another converted try. Prenton were unlucky not to claw one back as James Gale grounded the ball over the line late in the game only to have the referee pull play back for a prior forward pass. The home side were able to score again shortly after with another debut try, this time through Kane Rycroft showing good strength to power his way through the defence and over the line. A good day at the office for Rob Seabury as he was able to convert both tries and put 14 points on the board for the home team.

Considering that last season Anselmians were able to easily best us by a much, much greater margin there are a many positives to take away from this encounter, and if the team is able to continue with the rapid and sustained improvement shown in just 80 minutes then this season should see Prenton 2nd XV met with much success.
