A well-contested game in Prescot ended level, with 2 goals apiece.
It was Gainsborough who drew first blood of the afternoon, as Sisa Tuntulwana dispatched after 18 minutes with a far-post finish on the end of a deep cross, upon the back of sustained pressure during early proceedings.
The visitors replicated their early momentum throughout the majority of the opening half with a flurry of corners they were unable to convert; contrast to Tony Donaldson heading in on the stroke of the interval, before the flag was raised to preserve the away side’s narrow lead.
A triple, attacking-minded substitution for the hosts following the break proved the difference, with momentum changing direction.
It took just over 10 minutes of the second-half for Cables to find their equaliser, courtesy of a Bradley Moonan header on the end of a James Foley free-kick. In the following minutes, Goodwin almost grabbed the lead as he fired an audacious effort towards goal, which was met with a deflection and posed trouble for Robson, who was forced to tip over the bar.
Gainsborough were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes left on the clock; Simpson dismissed with a second yellow, merely a minute before Moonan smashed home his second of the afternoon into the roof of the net to grasp the advantage for Cables.
However, the hosts’ hopes of securing 3 points were tarnished in the dying embers, Jonny Margetts restoring parity amid blurring mist upon the pitch, signalling even honours on the full-time whistle.
