The proverbial game of two halves ended all square, as a last gasp free kick saw visiting skipper Ryan Wilson fire home a deserved equaliser for Mickleover, denying Cables a first victory of the season.
A dominant first half for the home side saw Wara nod home from close range after a goal line clearance from a corner. When Carberry made it 2-0 after the half hour mark, it was no surprise as Cables enjoyed a flurry of corners and dead balls around the Mickleover box throughout the half. An ultimately key moment came with the last play of first half injury time, when a Cables cross from the left struck a defender’s hand, but amidst very loud penalty claims from the home side, nothing was given.
Mickleover came out in for the second half on the front foot, and whilst Cables looked dangerous when they did attack, most of the action came at the other end, with Mendes making at least three excellent saves to retain the lead. An early double substitution for the visitors upped the ante, and it was one of the new arrivals, Edwards, who stooped low to head home the first with the clock ticking down after another incisive move down the left. When Wilson’s late strike hit the back of the net, it brought delight for the visitors and a sense of ‘what if’ for Cables.
