Bounced out.

Playing away near Finsbury Park on an artificial wicket I won the toss and decided to put the opposition in to bat. Rits and Biren opened the bowling and they kept it relatively tight with Rits taking a well-deserved wicket clean bowling their opener. Junior and Gaurav were first and second change and they continued to bowl well but found it hard to trouble the batsman. Junior bowled 8 on the trot and the batsmen were happy to see him off as he kept it very tight and bowled stump to stump. He was unlucky to not have his first wicket of the season as he dropped a c&b opportunity. Gaurav picked up a wicket of their other opener who was looking to pick up the pace with a catch by myself at extra Cover. Tejas also bowled 8 on the trot (very similar pace and accuracy as Junior) picking up the key wicket of their number 3 who ended up on 75, caught behind by hambo. The gamble of bowling a leg spinner paid off with Moj bowled an over which the batsman looked to go after and Ritesh took a good catch in the deep. The final 10 overs were made up of Ritesh, Biren and Sandeep and Rits bowled well to force the batsmen to play into the strong offside field we had set for them and he picked up 2 catches in the covers by myself and Punit but missed out on his hat trick. The final over went for 22 and we were set 230 to win.

Gaurav and Punit opened the batting and I’m sure they were glad they weir wearing their helmets when the first bouncer was on its way. Pacific opened with two pace bowlers with enough pace and bounce to get us jumping around the crease. Gaurav played his natural game and was caught at mid-on trying to hit the bowler back over his head but not connecting. Sandeep and Punit negotiated some hostile bowling and heated words from Sheldon who continued to bowl every ball short testing Sandeep’s patients with 2 slips a gully and a man out at a wide third man. Sandeep eventually gave into the short bowling and looked to cut a ball but got a fine edge which was taken by their keeper. Punit played well to stick in there playing some confident cut shots which with the pace on the ball flew to the boundary. I was in next and was looking to survive and see off the opening bowlers but after leaving a few that flew past my helmet I played at one and got a fine edge which was taken by the keeper. We were wobbling and Harish was next in, he looked to see out the openers but they were bowling so well they were kept going. Hambo was trapped LBW by Sheldon and next in was Tejas who was out first ball caught behind by another back of a length delivery. We were 39 for 5 of 12 and Biren joined Punit who was playing very well at the crease. They managed to pick off the odd bad ball and were looking to survive until the openers finished their spell but Punit was out in Sheldons last over, unable to get his bat down quick enough to a Yorker, giving the bowler a 5 wicket hall. The openers had finished their 8 over allocation but the damage was done and we were 55 for 6 of 16. Biren and Ritesh took their time and picked off runs until Biren was caught out. Moj was in next and enjoyed batting with Rits against their spinner who he hit around the ground with ease. He was eventually out LBW trapped on the back foot. Rits was caught out soon after but played well. Anish was out first ball LBW turning his back on a straight one, leaving Junior stranded n.o at the other end. We were all out for 111 in the 30th over.

It was a tough game, we were average in the field as we dropped 4 catches, we lacked a strike bowler to make early inroads into their top order giving them a platform to build a big total and we were taken apart by the pace and bounce of their opening bowlers. But a positive that came out of the game is that we had 2 new players who stepped up and played well for Priory when we were struggling to get a team together. The tough season continues but I’m confident there is a silver lining.
