Well Drawn!

Arkley CC won the toss and decided to bat first for our first timed game of the season. Rits and Biren opened the bowling but didn’t find much help in the pitch. Gaurav came on and took a much needed wicket in his first over and almost had one on his second over to break the opening batting partnership which was going well. With it being a times game and no restrictions on the number of overs per bowler it was Junior who kept it tight bowling 8 overs in his first spell and 2 in his last finishing with an economy rate of 2.6. He picked up his first wicket of the season with a very good catch at mid-on by Sandeep who ran in all the way from the boundary to take the catch. At the other end Forhad & Anish bowled well but with no luck. Anish almost had a wicket but a difficult high catch in the rain was put down. He also had the second best economy rate out of all of our bowlers after Junior of course. Vasa struggles to find his length but still finished with respectable bowling figures. Arkley finished on 180 for 2 off 39 overs. They batted very sensibly with their opener making 87 and we knew we had our work cut out.

We knew chasing 181 to win would be tough but we wanted to go for it knowing the pitch wasn’t doing much. Punit and Sandeep opened but punit played a pull shot getting a unlucky bottom edge back onto the stumps in the first or second over. Myself and Sandeep were comfortable at the crease picking up singles with their bowlers bowling most of their deliveries short. We took a few blows on the gloves and chest but we managed to score 3 or 4 an over. Sandeep after looking so good at the crease went to drive a ball which stuck in the wicket causing him to play the shot too early lofting it straight to their cover fielder. Biren was in next and after seeing off a couple of maiden overs decided to step on the peddle and he played the best quick fire innings that iv seen from a PPCC batsmen this season. He hit 6 fours in quick time and forced the opposition to push back their field. With us needing 4.5 an over there was confusion in the running between the wickets between myself and Biren with us both at the same end. Unfortunately Biren was run out but Harish was in next and he carried on when Biren left off with a four off his first ball back past the bowler! We picked up a few singles but I was next to depart trying to play a big shot but getting caught at square leg. Gaurav was out LBW without troubling the scorer. Vasa in at 7 in good form with the bat was told to still go for the win as we needed around 60 of the last 10 overs. Harish was finding the middle of the bat and bit a big 6 straight back over the bowlers head and we were around 143 for 5 with 6 overs left needing 37 from 36ish balls. It was very tight but at this point we were all very excited thinking Harish and Vasa were going to finish it off. The opposition however brought on a new bowler who was quick forcing Harish to push one to their cover fielder. 6 down Rits was in next but he lasted only a couple of balls before being clean bowled. 7 down with 5 overs left Junior was in next and advised to play out for a draw but he was out stumped. From a position of thinking we were going to win the game we were in now in trouble with the fielders all close in looking to take the last two wickets. Forhad was in next and with the rest of the team worried he was going to try and play a reverse sweep he proved us all wrong and played very sensibly with a compact defence and even playing a very nice flick for 4 off the quick bowler. Vasa was solid and saw out the last over at the other end and finish with another not out to his name adding to his average for the season. Although we didn’t win the game we showed a lot of fight with the bat and it was good to see Harish showing glimpses of his good form from last season re appearing. It was a very enjoyable game and a good friendly opposition.
