H the Hammer

We were back at home and playing a new opposition called Harrow Willow. The sun was out and we had a strong bowling unit so when I won the toss I decided to go with our strong suit and insert the opposition. We got off to a great start with Hitesh and Kunal Bhatt bowling a tight line for the first 10 overs and picking up a wicket each and a great run out by Abhi in the covers. H was unplayable and Kunal mixed it up at the other end finishing on 5 overs 24 for 1. The opposition were 70 for 3 off 16 and we felt well on top. We just needed to keep taking wickets but this is where our catching again let us down. The next 24 overs went for 200 runs that’s over 8 an over! We dropped their number 5 when he was early in his innings and he made us pay by going on to score 119 not out. I rigged the changes bringing on Dharmesh, Junior, Sid, Tej and David but they were all going for over 6 an over as the batsmen started to let loose. MP3 finished with respectable figures of 7 overs 42-2. He Picked up the prize wicket of their number 6 who at first looked very shaky but went on to get 93 runs. The opposition finished on 270 for 5 off their 40 overs and priory walked off for lunch in a state of shock. We had the opposition right where we wanted them but they managed to wriggle free and do some serious damage aided by roughly 6 dropped catches.

Tea was put on by Tej's Mrs this week and boy she didn’t disappoint! The opposition quoted ‘This is the best tea we have ever had’!

We knew chasing 270 was going to be a massive ask but we wanted to give it our best shot so I asked all off our players to go for the win. Tej and Punit opened and Tej played some wonderful attacking shots and scored a quick fire 64 which took the opposition by surprise. He was fortunate to be caught out in the covers with the score on 103 off 14 overs with 2 wickets down. We were up with the run rate and David batting at number 3 played very well for his 38 but we were losing wickets at the other end in quick succession Sid was out for 2 caught in the slips, Abs run out for 3, and I was out for a duck trying to cut a ball that got big on me. Dharmesh batting at number 7 played well made 12 runs but with the cloud cover the ball was swinging all over the place and the run rate was getting higher and higher forcing Dharmesh to lose his wicket soon followed by Junior.

Hitesh was asked to just bat out the overs and boy did he do a good job. He was supported by some good resistance from Kunal and MP3 but took it upon himself to see priory bat the full 40 overs. After bowling superbly earlier and also keeping wicket H just needed some runs to complete a very well rounded personal performance off. He played some un H like defensive shots mixed with some big hits to take him to 47 not out with one ball of the innings remaining. With his team mates telling him he just needed 1 boundary H hit a massive 6 back over the bowlers head to take him to a very well deserved and long overdue half century. Priory finished on 205 for 9 off the 40 overs which is a very respectable total considering the earlier position we found ourselves in.

If we had all turned up on time to do some fielding drills before the game so that we took some of the catches that came our way and therefore restricted the opposition by 50 odd runs I believe we would have won the game.

MOTH Hitesh Patel for his great all round performance with bat ball and gloves.
