We caught up with local PT Matty Ferguson to see how he is finding lockdown and why he joined the P&S coaching team back in June last year.

Q: Hi Matty, how are you doing?
A: Very well thank you, just missing being down at training and seeing all the lads!

Q: Now that we’re back in lockdown, how are you keeping fit?
A: Luckily I have a bit of a gym set up in the garage that I’m using but so is my dad and he’s slowly catching up which is motivating me to train harder haha.

Q: As a Level 3 Personal Trainer, what do you enjoy the most about your job?
A: I think the best the about my job is seeing the progression in people. Not only physically but how much more confident they are in themselves during everyday life.

Q: If anybody is interested in taking up some sessions with yourself, how is best for them to contact you?
A: If people are interested in some 1-1 or group sessions (post lockdown) they can either drop me a message on Instagram @ferguson_fitness_ or email me on fergusonfitness02@gmail.com

Q: The Ferguson family has been involved at P&S for a number of years now, but what made you want to become the clubs fitness trainer?
A: I think seeing the passion, determination and work rate all the players show on the pitch week in week out showed me that they are willing to take on any challenge that is thrown at them. And they continue to do that every session!

Q: The lads were loving your sessions prior to the lockdown, but how were you finding training?
A: I love coming down to training every week and seeing PB’s being smashed left, right and centre, whether that be shaving a few seconds off of previous times or adding a length or rep to their previous distance.

Q: Are you looking forward to seeing P&S in action next season?
A: I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the lads on the pitch next year. The numbers we are getting down to training will make for a really competitive squad!

Q: We are very grateful for your support at the club, not only as our Fitness Trainer but also as a sponsor on our Mind Charity training tops, what made you want to be involved in this project?
A: When I heard there was an opportunity to support such a great charity I couldn't have been quicker to put my name down. Especially in these times it’s so important to check up on your friends, family and team mates. I also did a little awareness event for Mind charity back in October where myself and mygirlfriend Caitlin completed 5691 reps (the amount of lives lost in 2019 due to mental health issues) to raise awareness about mental health.

Q: When training is allowed to resume and we’re back to doing the Bronco Test, who do you reckon will top the table?
A: Graham Mark has to be up there (I still haven’t seen him break a sweat even though he runs a sub 5 minute bronco!!). Then Tommo (Tom Clarkson) as well as he is frighteningly quick. I would also like to see Jack Robson’s name near the top as I have been working with him online and it would be great to see all his hard work pay off!

Q: You’ve played both rugby codes, Union and League, but which do you prefer?
A: Both are great sports for so many different reasons, but I would have to edge towards League as I was lucky enough to represent my country (also it’s a lot warmer as it’s a summer sport haha).

Q: And finally, the Guinness Six Nations are coming up (we hope), what are your predictions?
A: I would love to see Scotland near the top but realistically..
1) France 2) England 3) Ireland 4) Scotland 5) Italy 6) Wales.
