P&S beaten by better team in difficult conditions.

P&S travelled to Hartlepool to face a TDSOB side whom they had previously beaten earlier in the season. A strong squad of 17 travelled to despite having 7 unavailable.
The toss was won by P&S who decided to get first use of the blustery conditions and play downhill with the wind behind. In a scrappy opening 10 minutes, both sides tried to utilise strong forward runners as was to be expected but it was TDSOB who scored first capitalising on an unfortunate clearance kick which cannoned off the crossbar leaving the 1, the easy task of tapping the ball down. That kickstarted P&S into playing some rugby and big carries from Yannick Debil and James Bradshaw allowed some front foot rugby which set a platform for getting back into the game. Camped close to the TDSOB line, patient forward play sucked in the defence and a simple set of hands sent Debil over in the corner. With the usual dependent kicker Henderson away learning to ski, Patterson couldn’t convert. With halftime looming, the home side came back strong and their powerful pack worked them to the try line to take a 15-5 lead into the break.
Half time reminders about breakdown intensity and trying to play with a bit more tempo looked to have had the desired effect as P&S had the majority of the ball, with all the play in the TDSOB half. Tough conditions and good defence from the home side meant that handling errors were aplenty, leading to many half chances going astray. The home side extended their lead as they drove a scrum over the P&S line allowing the number the 8 to score. However, P&S came back strong and big carries from Brogan Millar, on his debut, Rob Reid and James Jordan gave the ever-impressive Gerry Robinson another try to add to his collection. Unfortunately, P&S couldn’t continue to claw back the deficit and the home side used the wind to pin the away side close to their try line and they ran in a couple more scores to effectively end the contest. There was still time however for Debil to cleverly take a quick tap penalty and charge in from half way to give P&S their third try but a final score of 41-15 meant the away side headed back north empty handed.
Not a good day at the office for P&S who were beaten by the better team on the day. Credit to TDSOB who certainly know their strengths and play to them effectively. Training continues at 7pm on Thursday, where focus will shift to next Saturday’s home game against Richmondshire.
