P&S rewarded after a display full of attacking intent.

P&S welcomed a rejuvenated Jarrovians RUFC to Stocksfield in round four of the DN3 campaign. We would like to thank our Match Ball Sponsor for this week, Anna’s New life Furniture for their generosity and support, please take a look at their website here: https://www.facebook.com/annasnewlifefurniture

A strong squad of 20 was available with the front 5 unchanged after their strong showing at Newton Aycliffe. Brogan Millar returned to an exciting back row which included the influential figures of Rob Reid and Yannick Debil. In the backline, the excellent centre partnership of Masters and Whiley continued with John Robson returning to the right wing.

Playing downhill first half, the match began in frantic fashion with both teams looking to play an expensive game. Quick ball was readily available but handling errors were aplenty, something which would have been a worry for coach Russell.

It was from a resulting scrum that P&S got the important first score of the day. A devastating 8 man push enabled Stephen Armstrong to strike against the head before Yannick Debil showed his pace and strength to beat the defence on the blindside. 5-0.

The try seemed to settle the home side down, who began to play the patterns of rugby that has seen P&S challenge the top sides in the league. Strong carries from Alex Fitton and in particularly Ryan Chamberlain saw P&S mount another charge for the Jarrovians line. After initially being held up over the line, P&S showed total control of the scrum as they walked towards the line. Despite losing control of the ball, Yannick Debil, regathered and powered over for his second of the day. 12-0

With the wind in their sails, P&S were attacking with confidence with Steven Henderson orchestrating attacks, using both forward runners on the inside and utilising the aggressive lines that Luke Masters was offering. From one of these direct lines, Masters burst over the gain line to advance down field. The forwards then took the attack on, working in pods to constantly provide quick ball which stretched the Jarrovians defence. With the visitors’ defence scrambling back into position Rob Reid’s quick thinking saw him pick and go and stretch over for his first P&S try. Again, Henderson duly converted to give P&S a 19-0 lead.

Having been competitive in their fixtures this season, Jarrovians began to play the rugby that would have pleased their coaching team. Strong carriers around the breakdown, targeting the fringes were proving fruitful as they pushed P&S back into their 22. After getting quick ball, a clever back move saw the Jarrovians Fly Half slip through a midfield gap to score a thoroughly deserved try. 19-5

The frustration from the P&S team that they had conceded during a half that they had dominated was evident as they came back with a vengeance. Brogan Millar and Ryan Chamberlain again made big yards through midfield before Yannick Debil took a delayed pass from Henderson to saunter in and complete a first half hattrick to give P&S a 24-5 half time lead.

The second half continued in similar fashion, as P&S seized further control of the game, scoring four more tries.

Firstly, Ryan Chamberlain scored a try that his performance thoroughly deserved. The visitors were penalised 6 metres from their line after slowing the ball down at the breakdown. The resulting penalty was quickly tapped and the tight head took the scoring pass to use his strength to touchdown. 29-5.

With confidence high, Rob Reid claimed the kick off and swiftly sent the ball wide to Danny Whiley who scorched up the left wing. Again, there were many eager ball carriers with Will Foster leading the charge on more than one occasion. The home side then demonstrated excellent handling skills to rewind play to the right touchline, before Chris Patterson spotted a small gap to snipe through. 34-5.

With Jarrovians tiring and suffering from some injuries, P&S continued to press and emptied an impressive bench. A whole front row change saw, Dan Tate, Adam Murphy and Clive Robson join the action and they continued where the previous had left off, dominating the scrum and causing havoc with the visitors’ lineout.

It wasn’t long before Yannick Debil got his fourth try of the day as he was afforded too much space up the right wing. With Chris Nicholls in support all the way, a try was inevitable as the covering defence couldn’t match the pace of the P&S pair. 39-5

Further changes saw, James Bradshaw return from a rib injury and Chris Nicholls moved from the wing to Scrum half for the final 20 minutes. Having been slightly starved of ball on the wing, Chris Nicholls was determined to make his presence felt as he sniped and provided clean ball to the backline who were looking to score at every opportunity. Despite not finding a way past the impressive Jarrovians back three, including their man of the match fullback, the ball was recycled to Brogan Millar who scored under the posts to complete a 46-5 victory to the Caris Robson Sponsored P&S.

A good performance from the home side who again showed fantastic attacking prowess, however the most pleasing part of the day was the improvement in the defence. Many thanks must go to Jarrovians for the match and we look forward to the return fixture later in the season.

With no fixture next week, P&S will next be in action away at Houghton on the 19th October.

Man of the Match: Rob Reid sponsored by Cundall.
