Pulborough under 16’s made the long trip to Jersey and beat their hosts to remain third.

Pulborough under 16’s flew out to Jersey on Saturday ready to play the league game on Sunday. We are the only team from Sussex in this age group to visit the island this year and Jersey were very appreciative of the fact, as it was the first opportunity most of the parents had to watch their sons play rugby in the league.
Pulborough spent the Saturday team bonding and were well fired up for the beginning of the match. They took the game to Jersey from the kick off and played the first 5 minutes down in the left corner near the Jersey line. The Jersey defence was very strong and repelled the Pulborough attacks. Jersey then moved the play down the field and went over for the first try on 14 minutes after some good carries by their big forwards.
Pulborough regrouped and took the game back to Jersey. The middle part of the half was played out in the centre of the pitch with defences on top. The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes when Ciaran Keating incepted in the backline and ran through to score under the posts from 40 metres out, which was converted by George Lee to give Pulborough the lead 5-7.
Pulborough then came again and a series of forward drives with Nick Van Pelt and Ed Crabb making space for Sam Fisher to link with captain Jack Wheaton to score out on the right on 24 minutes. An excellent team try with backs and forwards linking together for a fantastic score.
The rest of the half was again dominated by defence and Pulborough went into the second half leading 5-12. Jersey started the second half very well and put a lot of pressure on the Pulborough line. Great defence and an excellent turnover by Charlie Williams allowed Pulborough to relieve the pressure and move down the field. Some clever play by birthday boy Harry Venn in midfield put fly half George Lee in for a try on 12 minutes to lead 5-17.
Pulborough were now playing with more confidence with number 8 Ben Kidner ruling the lineout and the team worked a try for centre Jacob Temple to go over after good work by the back three of Charlie Treasure, Ciaran Keating and Sean Aurhammer. This was converted by George Lee to give a 5-24 lead midway through the second half.
Jersey were not finished and came again with their dangerous winger going over for a converted try on 23 minutes to close the gap to 12-24. There were some nervous faces on the touchline from the travelling supporters as Pulborough looked to be tiring. However they dug deep continued the tremendous team defence and saw out the rest of the game to achieve and excellent 12-24 win against a bigger and strong Jersey team playing with home advantage.
