With the heavy rain of the morning finally abating just in time for kick off, the girls began their first U18 campaign under grey skies against Uckfield. After some close early exchanges Jess Breach broke away for her first try of the match to give Pulborough SSB the early lead. Soon after Lucy Elliott got on the end of a good backs’ move and out sprinted the defence on the wing to double the lead.
The girls continued to put the Uckfield defence under pressure and Jordan Hopkins added a brace of tries from the No 8 position to give the home side a solid 20-0 lead as the game approached half time. Despite the lead, Pulborough continued to put Uckfield under pressure and Hermione Caddick added a fifth try with a strong run after breaking a couple of defensive tackles with Maddy Buckland adding the conversion, before Jess Breach added her second of the match to give a half time score of 32-0.
Uckfield stuck to their task though and their heads never dropped despite continued Pulborough pressure and Megan Brunton, playing out of position on the wing, showed great hands taking a difficult pass before scoring in the corner. Lucy Elliott then added her second after another good backs' move to take the score past 40 points.
Jess then completed her hat trick with a beautifully timed burst on to a perfectly timed pass to score under the posts and Ellie Gisbourne added the conversion before scoring a try herself with a break down the touchline to take the score to 54-0.
Uckfield’s continued commitment and determination really deserved a score but sadly for them, it was not to be and two more Jess Breach tries completed a 64-0 win for the girls.
