Competing at the annual event in Caterham, Putney had survived a slow start to the day to reach the semi-finals against the England-dominated team from the South-West League.
Roaring ahead 3-0 with their most impressive passages of play of the day, Putney faced a test of grit and determination as Newbury fought back to 3-3. With the score tied after full-time, the semi-final went through three periods of extra time, as both teams pounded up and down the pitch, much to the fascination of the spectators.
Ultimately, it proved to be a step too far as Newbury made the crucial breakthrough to score the golden goal and advance to the final, where they were defeated by Centaurs.
Earlier in the day, Putney had defeated Clapham and Hatch End Hawks, drawn with West London, and lost to Centaurs.
Although the team would have liked to have progressed further, there was plenty of food for thought in what was overall an encouraging tournament for the yellow and blues.
