Match report

IT was a trip back in time for the writer, going back to his old school!  It wasn’t the same as those ‘frozen to death’ seventies days as only the site was the same and even the name had changed.  But, in 2018, Cantell School possessed one of those winter tonics … a 3G pitch … and QK took advantage for their Intermediate Cup tie with Combination side Bush Hill Res.  This was the second meeting between the teams this season as two late goals for QK had previously settled a Southampton Senior Cup tie.

Well, this was a strange one as QK surged into a 3-0 lead only to be pegged back close to the end by a determined and resolute Bush side, a good few of them having worn the QK yellow in the past.

Drake put QK into a second minute lead, seizing on Bush keeper Davie’s parry from a Griggs free-kick to poke it home.  Bush looked to level but QK keeper Sainsbury blocked a Yandell shot and Payne fired just over the bar from some distance.  QK went 2-0 up when Fountain slipped a pass to Bojang who took a touch before hitting firm, low and into the corner from 20-yards.  When Drake made it 3-0 after 33 minutes QK appeared to be firmly in the driving seat, netting a well placed free-kick from the left after Griggs had been fouled.  However, that goal did come a tad against the run of play as Bush had created chances with a C Coombs header being off target and Sainsbury saving from Yeo.  Bush got one back when the ref spotted an infringement and Collymore [pen] placed the penalty beyond the keeper.  Griggs and Drake were off target with efforts for QK close to half-time.  HT: 3-1.

Bush pulled the margin back to a single goal early in the second half when Yeo received a pass and shot firmly home from 20-yards.  They could have levelled shortly after when Beazley headed a Yeo free-kick wide when well placed.  Meanwhile, an entertaining cup-tie moved up the other end with Davie saving well from Moody and also from a Drake free-kick which picked up a slight deflection off the wall, whilst Fountain drove just over.  Rochford was unlucky with a firm drive for QK that thumped off the post following a good move with Fountain and Drake involved.  Sainsbury made a good save late on to keep out a Collymore free-kick.  The QK keeper was in discomfort with a leg injury and Bush netted an 85th minute equaliser; it was an untidy scramble in the QK box and it fell to Yandell to turn it home.  There was still time for McCann to head a Yeo right-wing cross off the inside of the near post for Bush and across the gaping goal.  FT: 3-3.

It had to be decided on the day - now by penalties.  Bush had accounted for both Romsey Town Reserves and Colden Common on pens in earlier rounds, so they’d had plenty of practice!  Hayes replaced Sainsbury in the net for QK:

QK pens:  Fountain (scored); Breen (scored); Bojang (miss); Pearson (scored); Lamb (miss, hit bar).
Bush Hill Res pens: Collymore, Brady, McCann, Yandell (all scored).

And they say school days are the best days, this was not the case in the seventies or in 2018 either.  But, as I said to my soap in the shower this morning: "That's life buoy"!  [Gary Day]
