Quatt CC 1st XI vs. Wroxeter Grove
By Quatt CC
1st XI notched up a winning draw (17 points) from their opening encounter of the 2015 season with Wroxeter Grove at the Oval.
A good team performance and start to the season was thwarted by some stubborn batting by the away side's lower order.
Wroxeter won the toss and inserted the home side in on what proved to be another good deck at the Oval.
Skipper Ade Evans and his opening partner Elliot Parker got the innings off to a positive start with a partnership of 83 runs until Elliot was run out by Nick Bevan for 34 in what seemed to be a moment of deja vu!
Alex Biddle was next to go chipping in with 18 and keeping the innings ticking along. Ade Evans then fell fowl for 68 to an interesting first ball in the SCCL for Ronnie Chokununga who had literally just stepped off the plane.
Terry Hughes (34) and Craig Jones (52) built on the good start in the middle of the innings and then Craig Harris (31) upped the tempo with a 200% strike rate. Nathan Hakeman (26*) then guided the total to 300 with help from Jonathan Edwards (13) and Gareth Jones (1*).
Jonathan Edwards and Gareth Jones opened the bowling exerting pressure from bowling tight lines. Jonathan got the first breakthrough as the rain was looming by bowling Ronnie Chokununga (20), Wroxeter's overseas player. Gareth then cleaned up the impressive Bryan Jones (48) with what can only be described as a bar of soap following the brief rain shower.
A mcflurry of wickets saw Wroxeter collapse to 104 for 6 with Jonathan taking 3 wickets, Gareth picking up 2 wickets and instigating a run out at the bowlers end. Nick Bevan then added some rear guard resistance with an impressive 67 off 60 balls but when he fell to Craig Jones and then Joe Prichard was run out it looked like Quatt were closing in on victory.
However, Simon Jones and Dan Harris faced 76 balls between them to draw the game for Wroxeter. A solid effort on the opening day of the season by the 1st XI with every member of the team contributing to a good performance.
