2016 Kicked off with a Winning Draw to Beacon CC

QuattCC 2nd XI v Beacon CC 2nd XI

The 2016 season is finally here and Quatt 2nd XI got of to a solid start with a winning draw away to Beacon CC.

The day started with Skipper Cowburn losing the toss and being asked to Bat by Hosking. With the batting order set Lloyd and Knowles made their way to the crease to get the 2016 season underway. The start looked brilliant as the first ball was driven nicely off the back foot from Lloyd for the first run. However, after looking fairly solid Lloyd "misjudged" a straight one and was left staring in disbelief that the stumps had been hit. Dave Jones then came to the crease and began to rebuild a platform with the ever present Knowles. However on a wicket that made sure you never quite felt in, Jones fell for 6. The next 20 overs seemed to pass without alarm as Knowles (28 from 30 overs) and Man of the Match Hakeman (86*). Knowles was the next to fall when trying to push the scoring rate producing some exciting shots (scoop and reverse sweep), looping one up to be caught. Dave Street then entered the mix looking to add to his impressive 181* from last year and Beacon certainly felt it was a massive wicket when he didn't quite get hold of one when aiming a drive over mid off. Hakeman ensured the run rate and the score was still creeping up however and was ably supported by Chris Marshall for a well made 20. From there Quatt looked well set and when Cowburn came in at 9 with 3 overs to go he let loose to finish on 13 from 8 balls to push the score to 181 for 7 off their 45 overs. We won't mention the run out though hey Danny?

After Tea, with a very defend-able total on the board, Quatt took to the field to aim to score their first victory and 25 points (bonus point for the evergreen Tom Lloyd umpiring which we are very grateful for). Hall opened the bowling and looked to make early inroads producing played and missed shot regularly from the two Beacon openers. Cowburn opened from the other end and although both were very economical it took some time for Hall to entice the first wicket. Hall would capture a further two wickets during the game ensuring that his impressive form from 2015 is carried forward to the new season finishing on 3 for 18 off 13. A bowling change at the other end to Marshall soon brought another wicket with Marshall harnessing the massive swing he was getting by bowling cross seam and clipping the top of off stump, and continuing to bowl economically for figures of 1 for 10 off 7. It took another change of bowling from the same end for another wicket to fall with Adam Dyke taking 2 for 26 off 6.

Jenny Cotham was unlucky to not take a wicket when bowling some probing lines and lengths, however the Beacon batsman decided to push the score along with Cotham taking the brunt of it finishing with 0 for 23 off 5. The game looked to be meandering to a draw with the loss of 6 wickets, until a late flurry of wickets from Cowburn (3 for 27 off 14) bowled some good balls to remove all but the last batsman. With three overs left to get the vital wicket for a win, Hall and Cowburn bowled tight lines to try and get the points for the win. However, as the balls counted down the Beacon batsman managed to hold out to the end and score a draw.

Points ended Quatt 18 - 6 Beacon due to both having a qualifying umpire for the bonus point.

All eyes to next week when the 2nds start their home season off against Wellington who beat Wem in their opening fixture.
