After six friendlies and a long preseason, Quedgeley Wanderers reserves won their first game in division three against a tough AFC Pheonix team. With almost ten players missing due to injury or being called up to the first team, the reserves had to rely on a patched up team with help from the thirds to pull through this fixture.
Wanderers started on the front foot with plenty of possession and winning countless corners in the first ten minutes. But were unable to make the pressure count and Pheonix began to grow as the game went on. The game was very even throughout the first half with Jordan Rouse and Scott Maroney having little problems in defence whilst the midfield was pretty much 50/50. And it was no surprise that the half time score was 0 – 0.
The second half was a different story as Quedgeley failed to get going, and Pheonix deservingly took the lead on the hour mark. However quedgeley bounced back and Scott Edwards equalised 5 minutes later through a deflected effort to give the home team a huge lift. From then on Quedgeley found an extra gear and took the lead after Alex Mccattys run down from the left hand side somehow found Dean Hankins 12 yards out who slotted home.
Quedgeley hung on to claim all three points even though a draw would have been a fair result. But overall it was a brilliant result and a strong performance considering the situation.
