Rainworth battled hard against a side that has only lost twice in the league all season, but eventually capitulated, losing 4-0.

Bourne and Hucknall Town are the only sides to have beaten Radford this season, who to date are the only side to have beaten league leaders Aylestone Park. That was the task for a young Rainworth side that are still finding their feet in what is an extremely competitive league.
After Rainworth conceded in the 34th minute, it wasn’t until the 75th minute after two goals in three minutes could Radford relax. A fourth goal gifted by Rainworth completed the scoring on a night when Rainworth were shown the levels they have to reach.

Radford put Rainworth under pressure from the kick off and Ryan Skidmore did well to block Kyle Stovell’s effort, with his legs, in the 4th minute. Three minutes later Sacha Markelic hit the post with Skidmore beaten. A minute later and Rainworth were thwarted when Niall Slack outpaced the defence, but it was taken off his toes in the act of shooting.

There were chances at both ends when Markelic put his effort over when well-placed and Rainworth failed to take their chance and it was cleared.

Radford continued to create chances but resilient Rainworth defending prevailed. It beggared belief in the 21st minute how Stovell didn’t open the scoring, but Rainworth somehow blocked both efforts on the goal line. Skidmore did well to save once again with his legs and Jevin Seaton put the rebound over.

Rainworth had another golden opportunity in the 32nd minute when Nathan Benger did well to find Liam Arnold who laid it into George Simpson’s path, but his goal bound effort was always rising.

The opening goal came in the 34th minute from a corner, when Seaton found himself unmarked at the far post and had the simplest of tasks heading it home. Rainworth almost equalised from the restart but Lambert’s header was just wide of the upright.

In the dying minutes of the half Skidmore once again denied Radford pushing Will Bailey’s fierce drive round the post at the expense of a corner. That was to be the final effort of note and Radford went into the half time break leading by the solitary goal.

Rainworth almost conceded from the kick off when a defensive error presented Seaton with an excellent chance, but he put his effort the wrong side of the upright. Undaunted, Rainworth continued to push for an equaliser and Slack was denied by Yinka Adebowale. Four minutes later Adebowale almost gifted Rainworth the equaliser when he completely missed a back pass but fortunately for him it went the wrong side of the upright.

This only served into provoking Radford into pushing even harder for the second and Skidmore did well to prevent Stowell adding to the score, saving at full stretch. The Rainworth goal led a charmed life when minutes later Skidmore did well to block the goal bound effort and Damian Magee cleared the follow-up on the line.

Rainworth made their first substitution of the night bringing on Ryan Herbert for Simpson.

Radford’s second came with Rainworth on the attack, a misplaced pass on the edge of the area was intercepted and in two passes it found Scott Litchfield who had the easiest of tasks to score. Two minutes later and it was 3-0 when yet another counterattack saw Markelic score from close range.

To Rainworth’s credit they continued to search for a goal and a minute later were unlucky not to get on the score sheet. An excellent ball form Slack found Benger whose measured lob beat Adebowale only to see it rebound off the crossbar. Rainworth made another substitution bringing on Alex Hardman for James Culf.

Radford’s fourth came courtesy of a Rainworth error, Skidmore who had an excellent game in goal allowed a cross to slip from his grasp and although he recovered it, it was adjudged to have crossed the goal line.

Even at 4-0 Rainworth continued to search for that elusive goal, Brooks’s long range effort was gathered at the second attempt by Adebowale. In injury time Radford almost got a fifth when Markelic’s header struck the upright and then Skidmore pulled off a spectacular save at full stretch.

At the final whistle Radford were good value for their victory and Rainworth can take heart that they don’t have to play teams of Radford’s quality every week. Rainworth’s young side are on the beginning of their journey and if they learn from games like tonight’s then they will have a bright future.

RAINWORTH MWFC: Skidmore; Culf (Hardman); Cook; Harvey; Magee; Scott; Simpson (Herbert); Arnold; Benger; Slack; Brooks.
