On Saturday 15th June Ramsey Colts FD hosted our annual Presentation & Fun Day at the Tom Jones Memorial Field. This was our opportunity to showcase the brilliant players across all our age group teams, with the much-anticipated award of player trophies, as well as to thank the many volunteers that help grassroots football take place each week throughout the season.
Firstly, a huge thanks to the organising committee of Lyndsey Caton, Bethan Vaghela, Sally Rothery – and in particular Jo Rose who has been a key part in this and many events over the years - for all their hard work in advance and behind the scenes to make the day the success that it was. Indeed, the club, and grassroots football in general, exist through the hard work, dedication and commitment of volunteers – whether that’s the managers and coaches putting in many hours of work on training and matchday plans, the volunteers in Colts Cabin serving refreshments each weekend, the grounds team working tirelessly to provide excellent pitches to play on, the various office holders at the club taking additional responsibilities to help run Colts, and of course the many parents that volunteer to referee or run the line – the Trustees on behalf of everyone at the Club extend a massive thank you to you all.
Secondly, the Club and our teams are hugely grateful for the sponsorship support from so many local and national businesses – whether that’s providing funds for kit, equipment or team donations – it is all hugely appreciated and is vital in providing footballing opportunities to local children. Thank you to all the local businesses that supported the end of season Presentation & Fun Day with donations, the strength of our community is amazing and there are too many to thank here individually, however a special thanks to Harpers Haulage who provided us with a trailer for our stage.
The event was really well attended by players, friends and families from across our nearly 30 playing squads. Our thriving Dribblers and Wildcats programmes have been a huge success over the years, providing an excellent pathway into football for young players below 6 years of age across boys and girls formats. Both groups proudly took to the stage to each receive medals for their great efforts throughout the season.
We are especially proud to also welcome the newest addition to the Colts family – The Rams, our Inclusive Football offering for children with additional needs. This fantastic group of players train on Sunday morning and have been absolutely superb in the short space of time they’ve been training. Attending this type of event is also not easy for many of our players in The Rams, and a small number took to the stage to represent the group and receive their medals. We had another medal ceremony at our Sunday session for those unable to attend.
At the other end of the ‘experience’ spectrum we also marked the last season for U16 Stallions, U17 Tigers and Ramsey U18 teams, who have represented the club so well over so many years. There was special Commitment Award for players who had been with their team since they formed:
U16 Stallions: Frankie Mayo, Logan Lynch, Sam Broad & Ben O’Carroll
U17 Tigers: Aidan Smith & Henry Gilbert
Ramsey U18: Archie Chamberlain, Callum Farley & Joseph McFarlane
Each year we also recognise the team of the year through the “Andrew Ferrier Team Award”, which went to the Colts Cabin team of ladies, who all volunteer to prepare hot and cold drinks, bacon baps and other snacks each Saturday morning – thank you for all your invaluable work which is greatly appreciated by customers and club alike!
This year the “Sally Rothery Above & Beyond” Award went to Rosie Edwards who started at Colts as a player when her team The Rams formed where she continued to play in a mixed team until a couple of years ago. Rosie remained at the club helping coach young girls in the wildcats session and marking out pitches every week for the teams in the club. This coming season Rosie will become assistant coach to our new U7 girls Tigers team, as well as attending college and working. A real credit to the club and an excellent display of commitment.
Following on from the team presentations, a host of local businesses supported us with rides, refreshments and we had a number of stalls, games and activities to enjoy throughout the afternoon. Ramsey Colts current officials and players also hosted a friendly match against a team of ex-Colts. Plenty of lung-busting action saw some of the more ‘mature’ players roll back the years, ably assisted by more youthful players, to showcase their skills in front of the watching crowd, many of whom commented that it was like watching a match at Euro 2024..!!!
The Club has continued to grow over the season – we’ve introduced specialist goalkeeping sessions, we have continued to grow our girls football programme to become one of the largest and most successful in the region, and our recent introduction of Inclusive Football for players with additional needs has further enhanced our offering to our community (and for which we would welcome additional volunteers to help expand this). Our boys teams are thriving in their very competitive league competitions with league winners and runners up awards at U12’s.
Chairman John Buckwell commented “We had an extremely successful Presentation Day at Ramsey Colts, it was great to share in so many achievements throughout the club from the U6's all the way through to the U18's. It was also brilliant to see our newly formed Ram's (inclusive football group) represented on stage in our first year of our inclusive programme headed by Jason Vaghela, another great community addition to the club!
I would like to say a huge thankyou to all those who were a part of the build-up, planning, and delivery of the event, it all ran really smoothly (except for a brief intermission of hail and thunderstorm!). We are all looking forward to another great and successful season next year”.
