Ransomes Sports travel to Claydon this weekend (17th Dec) for their last game of 2022 in the SIL Senior Division KO 2.00pm.
The mood music surrounding Claydon and Ransomes could hardly be more contrasting. The Blue Circle ground appears an edgy place at the moment and Claydon's parlous position in the table offers a telling explanation as to their need to recapture that flair and imagination that has previously made them a real threat in the Division.
Having finished runners-up, you would have expected Claydon to launch another title challenge this time around. Not many would have expected to see Claydon sitting in a mid-table position as Claydon's season has failed to kick off so far. They are currently 7th in the league and have won just 5 of their 14 games played in the league so far.
They started the season well enough though, with only one defeat (Henley Ath) in their opening six fixtures but they have now lost their last 4 league games in which they have conceded 15 goals and scored only once.
It may seem problematic and daunting for Claydon at the moment, but beating Ransomes could add that spark needed to bring them back to the fringes of the top four. They need to buckle up fast though, so expect Claydon to only get better and prove once again that they are headed down the right footballing path.
Ransomes have previously trodden a similar path but now find themselves part of the established order to threaten champions Henley Athletic in the title race. Of late however, they have been hampered somewhat by injuries and unavailability in key areas, particularly in midfield. This has resulted in some dislocation between midfield and the forward line and as such, results have been rather better than performances. As a result, Ransomes will be keen to return to that early season form where there was a rhythm to their play that had style and swagger. If they can see out the year unbeaten, it will give the Ransomes management an ideal opportunity to get some much needed work into the squad before resuming again in the New Year.
While the season is far from over as yet, Claydon will need nothing short of a miracle to replicate their league standing from last season. An away win therefore remains the likely outcome, but if Claydon can avoid conceding early, they could make this a difficult afternoon for Ransomes.
