Match report by Myles

Local bragging rights were at stake in Curragha this morning as our U13's took on Ashbourne once again in what was to be a close game. There wasn't much between the two sides in the first half and early pressure from Ashbourne was managed well by the home team with some determined tackling and counter-rucking. The boys more than held their own before working their way down into the Ashbourne half of the pitch when (just outside the 22)Cian C took on the Ashbourne defense, showing speed and strength to cut through the gain line and score a great individual try and give Ratoath the early lead. A difficult sideline conversion was missed but at 5-0 our boys heads were up and they looked strong.

Ashbourne weren't going to let the game get away from them though and they played some good rugby, putting Ratoath under concerted pressure and holding onto the ball for multiple phases before forcing their way over the line with minutes to half time. The conversion gave them the lead at the interval 7-5. After the break Ratoath upped their game again and started to play with more control and composure. Much improved tackling, good communication and fast realignment from Ratoath meant that a strong Ashbourne 15 had their hands full and eventually the determination of the blue and yellow paid dividends. Cian C again took the initiative and cut through several Ashbourne players for a second score to make it 10-7 to the home side and 10 minutes to play. It was a nail biting finish thereafter and most of the possession was with the away team. Ratoath valiantly held the line inside their own 22.

Held up on the try line and stopped just short on several occasions Ashbourne threw everything into a final play - trying the blindside unsuccessfully before spotting the overlap out wide and moving the ball fast in what looked like a certain try-scoring move; but once again Ratoath scrambled and some brilliant last ditch tackling kept them out. With that the referee's whistle blew and the celebrations began ...a gutsy and well deserved win for our U13's. There was much to be happy with, including our scrummaging and tackling, but most noticeably a real determination not to be beaten and some great teamwork. Most improved player for the month goes to Robbie who was a huge influence in the game even though this is one of his first in a rugby jersey. Gavin takes the player of the month award after some determined displays in the pack and a great attitude in training. Special mention has to go to Cian C our man of the match today with two outstanding try's, Harry for some brilliant tackling and Laurie who tried tirelessly and bossed the game in the 9 jersey; but the most pleasing aspect of this win was the honesty throughout the team; all of whom put their bodies on the line throughout. They did us all proud.
