In the battle for the top spot in division 3 Ravens took on Elvington.

Thursday night saw Rawcliffe Ravens play their penultimate match before the end of the season against Elvington.

We knew this would be a tough game as Elvington along with ourselves have occupied the top two positions in the division for some time now so this was going to be a match that would come down to the wire in who would be the eventual winner of division 3!

Elvington came prepared well with 5 of their division 1 NYNAL players!

Not to be deterred Rawcliffe remained confident in the team that had got them to the top of the table and played an almost unchanged side with Sam Eaves picking up the WD bib in the absence of Jodie.

The game started fast and with quite a few nerves with both teams struggling to find their range early on. After it being drummed into us by coach Katie A that we need to be in front for passes, we realised we couldn’t rely on the overheads that usually work and had to rethink our game plan. We went into the first quarter break 5-8 down but relieved we had stuck to our players to not allow the score to blow out early.

We managed to keep working hard at getting the ball down court safely but it was always a tough ask against the very experienced NYNAL defence. They managed to stretch the lead to 14-22 going into the second quarter.

The second half of the game saw Katie Aconley move into the shooting circle and Faye Whiteley being introduced, and what a little bundle of energy she was. She brought pace to the centre court and with Katie opening up the circle beautifully, Ravens managed to go on a run of 4 unanswered goals. The defence were working their hearts out in the circle and sticking tight to their shooters. They even managed the odd intercept and deflection.

Katie Edson and Sam were hustling the centre court consistently however, it wasn’t to be our night and we eventually lost the game 37-45

A valiant attempt from Ravens who should be incredibly proud of the fight they showed during the entire 60 minutes of the game. Well done you little Ravens.
