A close fought game ends in a narrow defeat for a strong Vikings side…

It was the second match against the Thatcham team who we narrowly beat by 2 points at home earlier in the season with both teams scoring several tries. This time around it was a similar affair but with Thatcham winning by 2 points.

At the start of the game Reading conceded a try due to a good attacking move and high tempo game from Thatcham. Reading showed strong defence and effectively started using rolling mauls to gain territory in the Thatcham half. The pressure the Reading forwarded provided resulted in a penalty to us which Lloyd Thomas kicked.

The Thatcham 10 was superb with his territorial kicking pinning Reading back in their own half for a lot of the game. Securing their own ball via excellent rucking it wasn't long before Thatcham scored a second try.

A well placed kick and excellently taken line out resulted in prop Graham Wander-Smith securing the ball and smashing over the try line.

Reading became more aggressive at the breakdown and started using their own high tempo game making great strides into the Thatcham half, up to their line where captain Luc Bowie bounced off several tackles and stretched over the line for a well worked team try.

The second half started the same as the first with Thatchams 10 marshalling well and controlling the territory but a line out won and a rumble by second row Dan Parsons with forwards driving him on resulted in a try.

With John Ricau cutting some great angles and making some big hits it looked like Reading might have been able to break away but credit to Thatcham who stepped up and scored tries of their own.

Crossing prevented another try and yet another was held up well by the Thatcham defence.

With excellent support play by scrum half Jack Limbrick, winger Luke Hardaker finished well for another Reading try keeping Reading in the game until the final whistle.

Man of the match went to Simon Kourkgy who put in a tireless forward effort at the rucks, made many key tackles and carried well. A mention to Jon Ricau in the backs for his big, Irish hits.

Special thanks needs to go to Dale Owen, Toby Jessop & Luke Staff who all came to Thatcham as subs but who never got on the field due to restrictions on the numbers of subs we could use on the day. Thanks for turning up guys!
