Rebels fall to the Hawks in round 2 of OAFL action

Round 2 – Rebels vs. Hawks

After a solid win in the opening round the Rebels were looking to continue on against the Hawks in round 2. Entering the game with 9 players missing form the previous week, this offered and opportunity for some of our less experienced Rebels to play full games and get some much needed experience. The Hawks coming off a first round loss came out the more aggressive side and this showed on the scoreboard. Josh Ryder was winning most of the ruck contests but the Rebels seemed to lack the numbers around those contests.

Quarter Time Score: Rebels 0.0.0 Hawks 6.5.41

With some strong words of encouragement from Coach Busch, the Rebels came out more like they should have in the first quarter and managed to seize back some control of the game. The backline was playing some great footy with Kev Duffy battling hard and Dave Hyne back after a 2 year hiatus proving he will be a key player for the Rebels defense. Andy Teggelove was once again playing a solid game and with Kieran Hess getting the hard footy as usual, the Rebels managed to get on the board with 2 goals for the quarter.

Half time Score: Rebels 2.0.12 Hawks 8.8.54

The third quarter was much like the second with many good battles all across the ground. Nik Paps continued his good form from round 1, taking some strong grabs in defense and first gamer Nathan Campbell was starting to find his way as well. The Rebels managed to kick another major for the quarter after some great work on the half forward line to keep the ball alive.

Three Quarter Time Score: Rebels 3.0.18 Demons 11.13.79

With the game now all but over the Rebels needed one more big effort after playing a solid middle two quarters. Unfortunately it was not to be, with the much more experienced Hawks racing away to a big win after the sting had really gone out of the game. Credit to the Rebels who played, this was a tough loss but it is still only a blip in a season which still very young.

Congratulations to the lads who played their first game for the club – Will Avery, who also played in the Division 2 game with the RebelDogs and Nathan Campbell. Well done lads.

Final Score: Rebels 3.1.19 lost to. Hawks 18.17.125

Goal kickers: Peter Bormann 1, Michael Fabbri 1, Andy Teggelove 1

Buschy’s Best: Josh Ryder, Andy Teggelove, David Hyne, Nik Paps, Kieran Hess

Next game: Round 3 sees the Rebels take on the Dingos on May 29th, game starts at 11am at Humber North. This is a pivotal game for both clubs as they look to stay in touch in the finals race.

Following this game at 1pm, the Rebeldogs will be playing their second game against the Etobicoke Reserves.
