Rebels keep finals hopes alive with an impressive win over the Demons.

Another steamy Saturday afternoon presented itself at the picturesque but unfamiliar confines of the U of T Scarborough field for the Rebels who were heading into possibly the most meaningful game of footy that we have played for a couple of years. While a win would set either the Rebels or Demons up for an opportunity to make a stretch run at the finals, a loss would make that task almost impossible for either side. The day did not start ideally with a couple of late arrivals and a late withdrawal forcing some selection and positional adjustments before game time and interupting the flow of our prep and warm up. However, there did seem to be a confidence among the players that the job would get done.

The first quarter started predictably with a bit of an arm wrestle with both sides trying to establish superiority. The Demons had clearly given much thought to the match ups placing a tag on Fabs and choosing not to start their 2 best players on the ball. After the initial minutes of the game this seemed to back fire on them with the Rebels taking control of the middle of the ground and the forward line fighting hard to keep the ball in. K Duff was clearly going to cause them some problems with his height and strength and the double headed monster of Borman and Crackers looked dangerous early. The Rebels seized control in the middle and later half of the quarter and went in a couple of goals up.

With this being a game of significant consequence it was predictable that the Demons, who are a much improved team, would not roll over and they came out in the second quarter determined to get themselves back into the game. While they by no means dominated possession they certainly executed a little better than the Rebels and were able to pull back a couple of goals. The encouraging sign for the Rebels was that despite giving up a couple of goals and making a few skill errors the general approach was good and you felt that we still had enough of the ball to kick goals. The backline continued to be solid with Chook, Nacho and Alex in particular providing stability when the Demons got on a run.

At half time with a slender lead it was clear, as it often is in footy, that the team most willing to run, talk and do the team things most often would win the game. To the great credit of the Rebs it was obvious early in the 3rd quarter that it was going to be us. Jimmy and Drago absolutely dominated the ruck contests all day and started us off with some centre clearances that led to early goals. Buschy headed down to full forward and provided strong marks and straight kicking. In fact there were some that mentioned that he looked almost as if he was playing like a 42 year old again. Connie was provideing some real classy touches on the forward flank that set up goals and K Duff continued to dominate. However, the clear highlights of the term were both provided by my favorite asian footballer Tim Tam. First a scintillating burst into the forward line and then a crushing bump on the wing. In both cases his statuesque calf muscles were glistening in the afternoon sun providing pure power and poetry in motion.

The fourth quarter played out very similarly to the previous quarter with the Rebs kicking some early goals and putting the result beyond doubt. However, there were still some highlights to follow. Kudos to Donnie Larmer who continues to prove that determination and attack on the ball are the ultimate key to being successful on the football field. In typical veteran moves Hessy chose the soft option an bludged in the back pocket all quarter while Scotty took it one step further and dragged himself after coughing one up in the back line. After a quick application of WD40 to the joints Pete Borman ran out the game despite not being able to bend either knee since 2005 (might have to chip in and get him some of those Forest Gump calipers to get hime through a couple more seasons). On a serious note it was gratifying to see the group bear down and stay intense for the entire game. The backline communicated very well and made each other accountable to ensure that opposition players were covered. The mid fielders and forwards ran hard all day and finished well. Special mention to Josh who continues to carry a huge load for the club and has been an on field leader all year. Also, to Jovan and Will who are finding their way in the game and are improving in their attack on the ball every week.

So here we are with an opportunity to make a run. Nothing is guaranteed and the clubs that we are competing with feel exactly the same as us. The results of the next 5 games are in our hands. Let's get out to training, make ourselves available for as many games as possible and give ourselves a shot.

A big thank you to the Rebels Alumni who made it out the game on the weekend, we appreciate the support.
