Rebels AFC 1.8 draw Toronto Eagles 2.2

The Toronto Rebels were looking to keep the win streak moving forward this past Saturday vs the Eagles. Both teams have had a solid start to the season and this game was to prove a tough battle to get past each other on the ladder.

During the warm up, the mighty Rebels discovered just how wet a field can be after the downpour from the previous week. Humber South is not known for good drainage. Although the weather was dry the field was not. Some areas were several inches deep with water and others were just saturated not allowing for much grip from players cleats.

From the first bounce of the first quarter, you could tell this was going to be a tough long day! The ball quickly got soaked and, with all the other conditions, made it almost impossible to take a clean mark. Up and down the field the Rebels fought back and forth and at the whistle could only muster 2 x behinds.
First quarter score: Rebels 0.2 to Eagles 0.1

The second quarter built from the first. With Browny taking tough rucks and Jayden out back cleaning up the ball to get kicks forward to Spider and Kid, the conditions made it too difficult to take clean grabs. The ball spent most of the time on the ground with Rebels 2-3 deep attacking to take advantage. The Eagles had a few moments of fight with some good wing movement, but those attacks were repeatedly knocked down by Scuba, Philthy and the back line. Bull was dominate this day taking full control of the Eagles full forward and not allowing any easy grabs.
Second quarter score: Rebels 1.7 to Eagles 1.1

The third quarter proved to be much the same as the previous two. Dirty and tough scapping for the ball up and down the field for both teams. The Rebels continued to work the structures and if it weren’t for a wet, brutal day on the field, this reporter is certain that the game score would have been much different for the Black and White. The ball movement was fantastic and the leads were strong. The marks however were in short quantity and, as is commonly known, a wet footy field levels the game between the teams.
Third quarter score: Rebels 1.7 to Eagles 1.1

The fourth quarter was interesting to say the least. A few solid opportunities for the Eagles with some misses at goals and some good set shots for the Rebels that we could just not convert had both teams tied throughout the majority of the quarter. A few questionable calls here and there and the game was tied. Some inaccurate kicking by the forwards kept this game much closer than it should have been. With the Rebels up by a point and with 5 minutes left in the game, we fought harder than ever before stay in front. Ultimately the Eagles did get one behind and when the whistle blew to end the game we were a DRAW.

Full time result: Rebels 1.8 to Eagles 2.2

A tough day for both teams and although it wasn’t the result we wanted, we will take the 2 points and move forward.

We also celebrated on of our very best events on this day -- REBELS DAY. Sponsors, families and all sorts of supporters were on hand to see the Div 1 game and the OLD BOYS step up and play against a combined time of current Div 1 and Div 2 players. We were thrilled that 18 x OLD BOYS showed up for this event. The best we have ever had. The music was playing and the BBQ was smoking. At the end of the day it was a smashing success. We would like to thank all the volunteers who contributed to help make this day happen and for once again truly representing the REBELS BRAND!
