The Toronto Rebels went down by 16 points against the Toronto Eagles, in a game that was unfortunately another case of so close, yet so far. Despite leading going into three quarter time, the boys succumbed to some quick ball movement and class down the stretch.
Despite the predictions of thunderstorms, Humber threw up an overcast, albeit hot, day for the pivotal clash. However, the good conditions failed to result in high scoring as both sides' defensive lines were on top early. The Rebels had the best of the first ten minutes and kicked the first two goals of the game before the Eagles hit back with some strong marks inside fifty. At the first break, the score was 2.4 to 2.1 the Eagles' way - and they would have been further ahead if not for some inaccuracy in front of goal.
The Rebs came out firing in the second quarter and won the quarter 2.1 to 1 goal straight on the back on some strong defensive play. When the ball was moving quickly, we gave our forwards opportunities. The end result was a slender lead at the half.
The third quarter was the time to put the foot down, and it proved relatively lacklustre. Both sides were unable to penetrate inside forward 50, with the game played between the half back lines. The Eagles midfield start to get the better of it, but they were unable to capitalise as the Rebels got their matchups right up forward. Some big efforts from new kid on the block Nick Shalagan and Big Mike Coll ensured that the Eagles were held to only one goal for the term. Unfortunately, that's all we could manage as well. Just a couple of points the difference at the final change.
It was time to stand up and be counted in the last, but early signs were not good. A couple of centre clearances and good marks gave the Eagles the break as they kicked two quick goals to start the quarter and take the initiative. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to find a way forward and after being repelled by the Eagles defence time and time again. Inevitably, the Eagles eventually found a way to goal through our tired bodies, and kicked two more to put the result beyond doubt.
Yet another close one that got away from us from a Rebels perspective, and unfortunately one that may define our season. A 16 point loss leaves us some distance from the top six and needing results to go our way to have any chance of September action. However, with such a young team, there were many bright spots on the day, and we can only get better from here. Onwards to the Blues next week, and hopefully a win will come to get some confidence back going into the final few matches of the season.
